Red Raiders lead conference in student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs with five.
IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 announced Tuesday the recognition of 128 student-athletes for their Academic All-Big 12 Soccer Team. Texas Tech was tied for first among conference schools with 16 selections, and led the Big 12 in perfect grade point averages with five.
Â
"Sixteen is an incredible number, and to have five that are perfect is amazing for a fall sport," said Dr. Judi Henry, Texas Tech's Senior Woman Administrator who has also served as the sport administrator for Tech soccer since 1997. "When you talk about the epitome of a student-athlete, this is being the 'student' part."
Â
A program-record 16 selections makes it seven straight years head coach Tom Stone's team has had their Academic All-Big 12 selections reach double digits. In his time at Tech, Stone has seen 131 Red Raiders make teams, and this is the fourth year in a row the team has set a new program record.
Â
"Part of it is the young women that they are, but it is also enhanced by Coach Stone and his staff," Henry said. "They place importance on creating the right culture, and they understand that academics are significant and strive to find the balance with that work."
Â
First Team honorees achieved a GPA of 3.20 or higher, while Second Team members held a GPA between 3.00-3.19. In addition to holding a GPA in one of the above ranges, a student-athlete must have competed in at least 20 percent of the team's contests throughout the season to be eligible, or in the case of seniors, have done so over the last two years.
Â
Below is a list of the Red Raiders who were selected, along with their field of study. Those with an asterisk attached to their name achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA.
