Tech Battles to Four Set Loss at Kansas
November 03, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Red Raiders win their first set in Lawrence since 2011 as Hill collects a double-double.
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Junior Emily Hill tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs and senior setter Missy Owens recorded 43 assists, but Texas Tech volleyball fell on the road at Kansas, 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21) Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center in Lawrence.  Â
Â
The Red Raiders (16-9, 5-6) dug themselves into a 2-0 hole before battling back to take the third set behind the attack Hill. Kansas (15-7, 7-3), however, was too strong at the net as the Jayhawks out-blocked Tech 13.0-2.0 on their way to the victory.
Â
Hill caught fire in the third set, going 7-for-7 on her way to a team-high 15 kills on .303 hitting. It marked her 19th double figure effort on the year and the 10th in 11 Big 12 matches for the Denton, Texas, native. With 10 digs, she posted her ninth double-double in 2018 and 29th for her collegiate career.
Â
Reigning Big 12 Rookie of the Week Brooke Kanas added 10 kills and has also recorded double-digit kills in 10-of-11 league tilts. Senior Katy Keenan added nine kills and a pair of blocks, while freshman Karrington Jones provided a career night with eight kills at a .467 clip.
Â
Jada Burse led Kansas with 18 kills on .385 hitting with Ashley Smith chipping in 12 at a .321 clip. The Jayhawks connected at a .310 rate as a team while Tech managed .164. Libero Emerson Solano led the back line with 15 digs for Tech.
 Â
The first set was even with Tech down one at 18-17 before the Jayhawks closed it out on a 6-1 run. In the second frame, Tech libero Emerson Solano provided a pair of aces that pulled Tech to within four at 15-11, but a kill from Smith would extend KU's lead back to seven at 18-11 as KU ran away with the set.
Â
With junior Kylie Rittimann on serve to start the third, Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead after back-to-back aces. The Red Raiders kept a safe distance from the Jayhawks in forcing a fourth set. Tech again went to battle in the fourth frame as an ace from freshman Katy Northcut followed by a Jayhawk attack error evened the score at 15-15. KU used a 6-1 burst, however, to pull away and seal the match.
Â
With the loss, Tech misses an opportunity to move out of a three-way tie for fourth in the Big 12 standings with Oklahoma and Iowa State, both of which lost on Saturday.
Â
Despite winnings its first set in Lawrence since 2011, Tech has now lost 17 straight to Kansas and falls to 16-31 overall against the Jayhawks.
