Denesik Named First Team Academic All-American
December 06, 2018 | Women's Soccer
The senior defender is the fourth Red Raider to be named Academic All-American since 2013.
GREENWOOD, Ind. – Texas Tech senior Brooke Denesik was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Denesik is the fourth first-teamer in program history and fifth overall.
Â
She is the fourth Red Raider to be named to an Academic All-America team under head coach Tom Stone, the other three being Hayley Haagsma (First Team, 2013), Jaelene Hinkle (First Team, 2014) and Lauren Watson (Second Team, 2017).
Â
"It's no surprise," said assistant coach Gibbs Keeton of Denesik's selection. "She showed so much improvement on the field over the course of her career, and that takes massive commitment. And we knew she was doing exactly the same in the classroom."
Â
Denesik was named an Academic All-American after completing her senior season with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average as an accounting major in the Rawls College of Business. The honor comes after being named Academic All-District for the second time in her career in early November. In October, she was one of a program-record 16 Red Raiders to be named Academic All-Big 12 and one of five with a perfect GPA – a mark that led the conference.
Â
Denesik's senior campaign saw her start in all 22 games on a back line that led the Big 12 and ranked top-10 in the nation in goals-against average (0.53) and shutouts (14). In addition to being one of three senior anchors on that back line, Denesik recorded two assists – she fed Jordan Duke on her game-winner at Loyola Marymount and set up Cassie Hiatt on her game-tying goal at Kansas.
Â
Off the pitch, Denesik is involved in the Talkington Leadership Academy, which is devoted to developing leadership skills among Tech's student-athletes. She is also heavily involved in YoungLife and is a founder of CURE Tech, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of disabilities in third-world countries.
Â
"This is a player that is committed to the team and committed to improving, and it just really shows that she is exceptional at everything she does – from soccer to the classroom and beyond," Keeton said.
