Red Raiders Drop Two on Second Day of Aggie Classic
February 10, 2018 | Softball
Tech’s Aggie Classic finale against Boston College has been moved to a 10 a.m. start Sunday.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team wrapped up Day Two of the Aggie Classic with a 9-5 loss at No. 6 Texas A&M and an 8-2 loss to Houston in the nightcap.
Â
The Red Raiders (1-3) built early leads in both games. Tech used a four-run third inning against the Aggies (4-0) to build a 5-0 lead, before A&M responded with four of their own in the bottom half of the third and a five-run sixth to seize the game. Against Houston (3-1), Tech plated two in the top of the first before the Cougars quickly answered to carry a 5-2 lead into the second.
Â
Freshman Breanna Russell powered the Red Raider offense by going 3-for-6 on the day, including a two-out, three-run home run against the Aggies as part of the big third inning and added a double later against the Cougars. The Crosby, Texas, native becomes the second freshman to homer for the Red Raiders in their first two days of the season, joining catcher Kelcy Leach.
Â
Tech outhit A&M 8-5 for the game, chasing Aggie starter Samantha Show from the contest in the third. A group effort in the circle helped Tech carry a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth inning. Freshman Erin Edmoundson, who also compiled two hits, a double and two RBI at the plate in the doubleheader, tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just two hits and a run while striking out a pair. Sophomore Kassidy Scott was pegged with the loss in her 2.0 innings of work.
Â
The Red Raiders got on the board in the first off a double down the left field line from Kiana Workman that scored Hartwell from second. In the third, redshirt freshman Michaela Cochran singled up the middle and stole second before coming home on a base hit from Edmoundson. Junior Kiana Workman would single before Russell blasted one over the fence in left field for a 5-0 Tech lead.
Â
The Aggies responded in the bottom of the third as a double by senior Tori Vidales scored a run and then a pair of illegal pitches were issued to Edmoundson with the bases loaded that would help walk in a run. The Aggies tacked on two more with a pair of sacrifice flies to right field.
Â
The breaks continued to go A&M's way in the sixth as they plated a pair to take a 6-5 lead, before senior Ashley Walters extended it to 9-5 with a three-run shot to center field.
Â
In the nightcap against Houston, Tech again got the bats going in the top of the first. Junior Jessica Hartwell drew a two-out walk, and Edmoundson knocked her in with a double to left center. A base hit through the right side from Workman would bring home Edmoundson to give Tech a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Cougars, however, crossed the plate five times in the bottom of the first and scored three more in the fourth on their way to the win. Senior Mariah Garcia finished a home run short of the cycle at 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cougars.
Â
Houston's Trystan Melancon settled in to pitch a complete game. Senior Cheyene Powell received the loss in the start for Tech. Edmoundson and Scott combined to strike out seven in 5.1 innings of relief.
Â
Texas Tech closes play at the Aggie Classic with a 10 a.m. first pitch Sunday against Boston College. The Red Raiders then pick up and travel up the road to UT Arlington for a Tuesday tilt. Follow @TexasTechSB on Twitter for updates.
