Nilehn Grabs Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic Title

Nilehn cards a final-round 66 to finish off his fourth win as a Red Raider
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – There is not a hotter collegiate golfer in the nation than Texas Tech senior Fredrik Nilehn, who picked up his fourth tournament title as a Red Raider at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Tuesday.
Nilehn becomes the second Red Raider with four individual wins under head coach Greg Sands, joining Clement Sordet, who collected five.
In addition to now having two tournament wins this season, Nilehn has earned a top-15 finish at each tournament during the 2017-18 campaign.
It was a final-round 66 that delivered the finishing blow against the field for Nilehn, who went 69-66-66, making him the only player at the tournament to go sub-70 in all three rounds. Nilehn carded three birdies and an eagle in his first six rounds of the day, and never looked back from there.
"What can you say at this point?" Sands said. "Freddy is having a phenomenal season, maybe the best individual season out of anyone in the country. He took the lead on an extremely tough field and only tightened his grip as play went on. It's been incredible to watch."
As a team, the No. 9 Red Raiders (-12) recorded their sixth second-place finish of the season, despite falling as low as 14th place on Monday, before surging back up the leaderboard with 8-under 280's in both rounds two and three.
Hurly Long snagged a top-20 finish, going even-par for the tournament and tying for 18th, Sandy Scott (+2) tied for 27th, and Ivan Ramirez and Adam Blomme each went +7 to tie for 56th, rounding out the team scoring.
Playing as an individual, Thomas Allkins finished the tournament at +12, tying for 73rd.
"Our level of consistency has really been something," Sands said. "It's difficult to continue to rack up really good finishes as the locations and fields change. It's a testament to our team, their preparation and their focus. I'm looking forward to watching them continue to roll.
Tech returns to action April 7, at the Aggie Invitational, which will be held in Bryan, Texas.
