The Red Raiders open with three runs in first, but fall after six unanswered by Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The No. 5 Texas Tech baseball team split its midweek series at No. 4 Louisville, falling in the finale, 7-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Â
The Red Raiders (16-3) opened the game with a three-run homer, but only scored one more time against the Cardinals (15-2). Tech finished the day with five hits, while Louisville plated six unanswered over the final four frames to steal Wednesday's contest.
Â
Freshman infielder Gabe Holt put together a multi-hit performance, his team-tying 10th of the year, recording two hits against the Cardinals. Junior infielder Cameron Warren & freshmen Cody Masters & Kurt Wilson also recorded knocks for Tech.
Â
Sophomore right-hander Connor Queen picked up the start on Wednesday afternoon, his first as a Red Raider. The Boerne native tossed 3.0 innings, giving up just one run on three hits. He gave way to another sophomore RHP, John Henry Gonzalez, who tossed 2.0 innings, striking out four, while allowing one run on three hits. Freshman righty Ryan Sublette would get charged with the loss after 0.2 innings of work in the sixth.
Â
The Red Raiders put three runs on the board in the first inning, scoring in the opening frame for the fifth time this season. Back-to-back walks to Wilson & sophomore infielder Josh Jung set up a two-out, three-run homer from Warren to take a 3-0 lead.
Â
It was Warren's second homer of the year and the 17th time in 19 games with at least one three-run inning.
Â
Louisville got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Mann. With one out, Snider placed a triple just inside the left field line, then was moved home after Mann's fly ball was caught by Little on top of the left field bullpen.
Â
Tech pushed the lead back to three with another run in the fourth inning. Three-straight singles from the three freshman (Masters, Holt, Wilson) in the batting lineup resulted in an RBI for Wilson and a 4-1 lead for the Red Raiders.
Â
A solo home run from Stowers to begin the fifth inning cut the Tech advantage down to 4-2. The Cardinals would tie the game in the sixth after an RBI single from Rumero brought in one, then a fielder's choice with the bases loaded evened the score at four. With the bases loaded and two away, a wild pitch allowed another run to score, giving Louisville its first lead of the day at 5-4.
Â
An RBI single in the seventh from Campbell extended Louisville's lead to 6-4, while a sacrifice fly in the eighth pushed the lead to 7-4, giving the Cardinals in each of their last four innings to bat.
Â
The Red Raiders open Big 12 play on Friday night in Waco, taking on Baylor in a three-game set on March 16-18 at Baylor Ballpark.
