No. 5 Tech Falls In Conference Opener

The Red Raiders out-hit the Bears, but are shut out Big 12 series opener
WACO, Texas – The No. 5 Texas Tech baseball team got a strong pitching performance, but dropped its Big 12 opening game at Baylor, 2-0, on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.
The Red Raiders (16-4, 0-1) out-hit the Bears (9-6, 1-0), recording six to Baylor's four. It was the first time Tech did not score a run this season. The Red Raiders had seven two-out baserunners in the series opener.
Junior right-handed pitcher Davis Martin tossed a season-high 7.0 innings against the Bears on Friday. He allowed two runs on four hits, did not issue a walk while striking out a career-high 10 batters. It was his first loss of the year.
Martin's outing was the fourth time he had pitched 7.0 innings in his Red Raider career and first since Feb. 24, 2017, against California.
Sophomore infielder Josh Jung had two of Tech's hits, recording a pair of singles in the first and sixth innings. It was his team-leading 11th multi-hit performance of the season.
Baylor plated the first run of the day in the opening frame, as a two-out double by Langeliers was fulfilled by an RBI single from Wendzel, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead after one.
The Bears got its second run of the night in the seventh after five scoreless frames. Wendzel began the inning with a double to left-center field, then was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt from Thomas. A throw at the plate on a grounder in the infield was overthrown, allowing Wendzel to push Baylor's advantage to 2-0.
The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark on FOX Sports Southwest.
