The Red Raiders drop its first conference series of the year in Waco
WACO, Texas – The No. 5 Texas Tech baseball team dropped game two of its weekend set at Baylor, 12-2, on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark.
Â
The Red Raiders (16-5, 0-2) and the Bears (10-6, 2-0) were delayed for an hour and 59 minutes after lightning & rain hit the area.
Â
Sophomore right-handed pitcher John McMillon went 4.2 innings against the Bears on Saturday. The Jasper native allowed just one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four. He worked out of a couple tight situations during his fifth start of the year, exiting with the game tied at one.
Â
Senior designated hitter Zach Rheams had two of Tech's six hits in the contest, both singles. It was his first multi-hit game of the year in his first start of the season.
Â
The Red Raiders struck first on Saturday, scoring one in the third for the 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Tech traded a double play for a run, scoring freshman outfielder Cody Masters, who walked to begin the frame.
Â
After a scoreless frame, the Bears countered in the fifth with one of their own to tie the game. A two-out RBI double to left field from Wendzel brought in Downey from second, who singled with one out in the frame.
Â
Senior lefty Dylan Dusek came on in relief of McMillon, closing the book on the fifth inning with a strikeout to keep the game even.
Â
After a pitching change, the Bears would take the lead in the sixth on a similar play as Friday night. With runners on second & third, a play at the plate on a grounder was not corralled, with the slide kicking the ball to the backstop, scoring a run for the lead. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Wendzel added another, while a two-RBI single from Thomas pushed the Baylor lead to 5-1.
Â
BU would score again in the seventh on another bases-loaded HBP to make it 6-1. Lightning hit the area with the bases loaded and one out, sending the game into a delay for an hour and 59 minutes. After the delay, Baylor tacked on six more runs on four hits, a walk & a fielder's choice to take a 12-1 lead.
Â
Tech picked up one in the eighth inning as Rheams brought in a run on a single to center field, scoring sophomore infielder Josh Jung.
Â
The Red Raiders and Bears conclude the weekend set on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark on FSSW+.
