March 18, 2018 | Baseball
The Red Raiders rack up 11 runs on 13 hits in Sunday’s win in Waco
The Red Raiders (17-5, 1-2) picked up its first conference win of the year behind 11 runs & 13 hits against the Bears (10-7, 2-1) in the finale. It was the first time since March 3 against South Alabama & the seventh time this season Tech has recorded 10 or more runs in a game.
Four Red Raiders produced multi-hit bids at the plate on Sunday, with sophomore infielder Josh Jung racking up three knocks. Seniors Michael Davis & Zach Rheams and sophomore Grant Little also had two hits in the contest, while Little recorded three RBI.
Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Shetter got the starting nod in the finale, tossing 2.0 frames against the Bears. He gave up three runs on four hits, walking one & striking out one, before giving way to junior righty Ty Harpenau in the third. Harpenau tossed 4.0 innings on his way to his second win of the year.
The Red Raiders struck first for a pair of runs in the opening frame. A pair of free passes to freshman Gabe Holt (HBP) to begin the frame & sophomore Clay Koelzer (BB) with two away, set up Tech's sixth game with runs in the first inning. Little worked a full-count, then barreled a two-RBI double to the gap in right-center field for the 2-0 lead.
Baylor answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Just like Holt, Haring led off with a hit-by-pitch to begin the frame, then Langeliers hit a two-run homer off the left field foul pole to tie the game. They'd get another one to take the lead in the second inning off a solo homer from Bissonette.
Tech would knot it up at three after Jung's RBI single to left field with nobody out in the third inning. Holt & Davis produced back-to-back four-pitch walks to begin the frame, then Holt came screeching home on Jung's knock.
Holt would drive in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning on a single to center field to score junior Zayne Willems, who walked to open the frame for a 4-3 lead. With freshman Cody Masters on third after a single of his own & Holt on first, Davis smoked a double to the gap in left-center field, clearing the bases for a 6-3 advantage.
It was Davis' team-leading eighth multi-RBI performance this season.
Rheams stepped to the plate to pinch hit after a pitching change with Davis on second, then proceeded to crush a two-run homer over the right field wall for an 8-3 lead. It was Rheams' first home run of the season, coming after a two-hit day in his first start of the year on Saturday.
An RBI single from Cascadden with one away in the bottom half of the fourth cut in to Tech's advantage at 8-4. However, the Red Raiders got it back and tacked on two in the next frame to take a 10-4 lead. Masters recorded a one-out single, then was brought home on a triple by junior Cody Farhat to the wall in right-center field for the first run of the inning. With two away, Jung roped a single up the middle to bring him home. In the eighth, a sacrifice fly from Little scored Davis to round out the scoring at 11-4.
The Red Raiders return to action on Friday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. against Northeastern at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
