No. 8 Tech Mashes Four Homers In 13-2 Saturday Win
March 24, 2018 | Baseball
The Red Raiders complete the doubleheader with 13 runs on 16 hits against the Huskies
The Red Raiders (20-5) totaled 25 runs between the two games in the doubleheader, scoring 13 runs on 16 hits in the third overall game of the series against the Huskies (11-8). On Friday night, Tech plastered 22 runs in the opener against Northeastern.
Four Tech batters put together multi-hit performances at the plate, with senior Michael Davis recording four hits, coming a triple shy of the cycle. Junior Zayne Willems had three hits & a run scored, Junior Cameron Warren had two hits, along with three RBI & two runs scored, while sophomore Josh Jung also had two hits to go with four RBI and two runs.
The Red Raiders tallied four homers in the second game of the doubleheader, doing so for the third time this season. Tech also had four-home run days against Maine (Feb. 17) and New Mexico State (Feb. 20).
Sophomore right-handed pitcher John McMillon started the second game of the doubleheader, his sixth start of the year. The Jasper native matched a season-high 6.0 innings on the mound, giving up just six hits, no runs, walking three & striking out a career-high nine Huskies. He improved to 4-0 on the season with the win.
The Red Raiders struck first in the second game of the doubleheader, as Tech plated three in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Warren led off the frame with a walk, then took second on a deep foul out along the fence in left field. The hustle was appreciated, but it wouldn't matter as junior Cody Farhat crushed a two-run homer in the next at-bat to make it 2-0.
It was Farhat's second home run of the year and fourth-straight game Tech had sent a long ball over the wall. Freshman Gabe Holt kept the inning rolling with a single up the middle, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, making it easy for sophomore Brian Klein to drive him home with a double to the gap in right-center field.
The three-run second was the 21st game this season and fourth-straight game the Red Raiders had scored three in a single inning.
Four scoreless frames passed before Tech cracked up a seven-spot in the seventh inning. With Willems & Farhat in scoring position, Klein lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in the first run of the frame. A two-out, RBI single from Jung to left field pushed Farhat home for the 5-0 lead.
The next eight runs would come in the form of three dingers. Davis sent his fifth homer of the year into the left field bullpen, while Warren crushed a three-run jimmy jack, his third home run of the season, to wrap a seven-run seventh inning. In the eighth, Jung mashed Tech's fourth homer of the day, a three-run HR, onto a street lamp behind left-center field to push the Tech lead to 13-0.
Northeastern scored their first runs of the game in the final inning, bringing in two after a bases-loaded walk to Farrell & an infield single by Holzwasser, preventing the game three shutout.
The Red Raiders and Huskies wrap the four-game set on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
