Soccer to Hold First Practice of Fall
July 31, 2018 | Women's Soccer
LUBBOCK, Texas – Head coach Tom Stone will host Texas Tech soccer's first practice of the 2018 season Wednesday. With the team's first contest – an exhibition match at Denver – just over a week away, Stone is excited to see where his team is at as they return from summer.
Stone's Red Raiders are coming off a 2017 campaign during which they posted a record of 9-7-3. The team made the Big 12 Tournament for the 11th straight season, dating back to Stone's first year at the helm in 2007. They are also looking to return to the NCAA Tournament after making appearances there in five of the last six seasons.
Returning from that 2017 roster will be 10 of the 11 starters, plus several promising freshmen and transfers. On the offensive side of the pitch, sophomore forward Ally Griffin returns after leading Texas Tech in points (13), goals (6) and game-winning goals (5), in addition to shots (58) and shots on goal (28). Griffin will be joined up front by senior Gwennie Puente who, along with Griffin and junior Jordie Harr, was named All-Big 12 Second Team last fall. Griffin was also named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Donning the Scarlet & Black for the first time will be midfielder Jayne Lydiatt, a junior transfer from Oregon. Lydiatt, who enrolled at Tech last spring as a mid-year enrollee, will see her first playing time for the Red Raiders after playing in 19 matches for the Ducks in 2017. In Eugene, she racked up five points off two goals and an assist as a sophomore. In 2016, she tallied three goals and one assist to rank third on the team in goals as a true freshman. Also preparing to play under the lights at John Walker for the first time will be freshmen Cassandra Hiatt, Alyssa D'Aloise and Charlotte Teeter. Hiatt has already spent time with the U.S. Youth National Team, much like teammates Griffin, Harr and Kirsten Davis.
Tech's exhibition match against the Pioneers is set for Saturday, Aug. 11. They will play at 6 p.m. MT (7 p.m. CT).
