Texas Tech to Participate in Fields of Honor Program
September 14, 2018 | Women's Golf
Red Raiders will begin carrying the special golf bag this weekend at the Mary Fossum Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will have an extra special memento to carry on the links this season.
Â
A team bag, inscribed with the name of a fallen or severely wounded soldier will be carried by one Red Raider golfer each tournament this season as part of a promotion through the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and Folds of Honor. Tech will select a different golfer each tournament to honor Richard Guinan, a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and the Iraqi Freedom and Inherent Resolve.
Â
"We're truly honored to participate in Folds of Honor," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "This initiative has been part of the WGCA's platform for several years now, and we couldn't be more humbled to participate and honor Mr. Guinan in the process." Â
Â
Sophomore Louisa Brunt will have the honor of carrying the specially-designed golf bag this weekend when the Red Raiders open the 2018-19 campaign at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State. Following the season, the bag will be auctioned to benefit the Folds of Honor program.
Â
The mission of Folds of Honor is "Honor their sacrifice. Educate their legacy". Since forming in 2007, Folds of Honor, has awarded nearly 16,000 educational scholarships to the families and loved ones of heroic soldiers. The program is dedicated to changing the lives of these families through education, while recognizing and honoring those who have fought for the nation's freedom.
Â
Tech will reveal who will carry the Fields of Honor bag each week via @TexasTechWGolf on Twitter and Instagram. The Red Raiders will open the Mary Fossum Invitational with 36 holes Saturday with coverage provided throughout the day at Golfstat.com.
Â
Robertson will have four familiar faces in her lineup Saturday led by senior Mami Yamamoto and sophomores Sofia Garcia, Amy Taylor and Louisa Brunt. They will be joined in the lineup by freshman Anna Dong, who will be making her debut alongside Cecilie Nielsen. Nielsen will be playing as an individual this weekend.
Â
Garcia, meanwhile, will be returning to the links after missing all but one tournament during the 2017-18 season. She previously posted Tech's lowest scoring average as a freshman in 2016-17 with a 73.6 clip. Garcia earned a medical hardship waiver for last season that keeps her as a sophomore.
