Sofia Garcia led the Red Raiders in a tie for 11th place Sunday at the Mary Fossum Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team turned in a seventh-place performance in its first tournament of the season Sunday as the Red Raiders finished a combined 24-over-par 888 over three rounds at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan.
Â
The Red Raiders, who are coming off their eighth NCAA Regional appearance in the last nine years under head coach JoJo Robertson, finished behind five schools that finished among the top 35 of the Golfweek Magazine final poll last year as part of the competitive 16-team field at Michigan State's Forest Akers Golf Course, one of four NCAA Regional sites this May.
Â
Sofia Garcia, in her first tournament after a season-ending injury a year ago, finished in a tie for 11th place to lead the Red Raiders following back-to-back even par 72 cards to close the tournament. She was 1-over for the weekend thanks in part to 43 pars, which finished tied for the most among the 90-player field.
Â
Louisa Brunt and Anna Dong posted Tech's next two lowest cards at 7-over and 8-over for the tournament, respectively. Brunt closed the event in a tie for 28th place while Dong, who was making her collegiate debut, ended in a tie for 30th overall.
Â
Amy Taylor and Cecilie Nielsen closed in similar fashion at 12-over for the tournament and a tie for 49th place. It was the collegiate debut for Nielsen, who was playing as an individual. Mami Yamamoto rounded out Tech's lineup in a tie for 57th overall at 15-over for the weekend.
Â
Virginia claimed the team title after signing a 7-under card over all 54 holes, two strokes better than host Michigan State. Florida was the only other team under-par at 2-under overall followed by Georgia in fourth at 3-over, Old Dominion in fifth at 16-over and Miami in sixth at 18-over.
Â
Tech will resume its fall slate Oct. 8-9 when the Red Raiders travel to Chicago for the Illini Invitational. It will be the second of four tournaments this fall for the Red Raiders, who will also stay in state for the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin on Oct. 19-21 and the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos on Oct. 28-29.
