Texas Tech opens the two-day Illini Invitational with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start Monday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will return to the links Monday morning when the Red Raiders open the Illini Invitational held at the famed Medinah Country Club just outside of Chicago.
Â
The Red Raiders will play 36 holes Monday as part of the two-day tournament at the site of one of the most legendary courses in all of golf. Medinah Country Club has played host to the 2012 Ryder Cup, three U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships since its founding in the 1920s.
Â
Tech will be one of nine schools in the 15-team field ranked in the top 50 of the latest Golfstat poll as the Red Raiders are No. 49 following a seventh-place showing at the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational. The field also features No. 14 Kent State, No. 19 San Jose State, No. 20 Miami, No. 24 Illinois, No. 26 SMU, No. 32 Purdue, No. 35 Virginia Tech and No. 36 East Carolina.
Â
Tech head coach JoJo Robertson will utilize a slightly different lineup than the one the Red Raiders used in Michigan as senior Mami Yamamoto will be joined by sophomores Sofia Garcia and Amy Taylor as well as freshmen Anna Dong and Cecilie Nielsen. All five Red Raiders played at the Mary Fossum Invitational with Nielsen participating as an individual.
Â
Garcia concluded the event as Tech's highest finisher in a tie for 11th after consecutive even-par cards to close the tournament. Brunt followed in a tie for 28th overall, one stroke ahead of Dong, who finished 30th in her first collegiate debut.
Â
Dong will be the designated Red Raider to carry the Folds of Honor bag this week that honors Richard Guinan, a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and the Iraqi Freedom and Inherent Resolve. A different Red Raider will carry the specially-designed bag at each tournament this season. Â
Â
Play begins with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start Monday morning as Tech will be paired with both Virginia Tech and East Carolina. The tournament will resume with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start Tuesday. Live scoring will be provided on Golfstat.com.
