Red Raiders Open Big 12 Play at No. 19 Baylor Wednesday
September 18, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Red Raiders carry a five-game winning streak into Waco, where they’ll look to top BU for the first time since 2014.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball launches its Big 12 slate Wednesday as it takes on No. 19 Baylor at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. First serve will be at 7 p.m. with coverage on FOX Sports Southwest.
Â
The Red Raiders (11-3) enter Wednesday on a five-game win streak after winning the UTRGV Tournament last weekend. Junior Emily Hill was named MVP of the event, while sophomores Emerson Solano and Allison White received all-tournament honors.
Â
Baylor (8-3) won both meetings last season and has won seven in a row overall. Despite a 3-2 setback to UTRGV at its home tournament two weeks ago, the Lady Bears have won three in a row entering the contest.
Â
"We're feeling good about where we're at right now," head coach Tony Graystone said about the team entering conference. "It's been a little up and down. We've, had moments where we look great and others where we are just searching. Overall, I feel good about what we've done and where we're at. I know the urgency is going to kick in, and we get to put our attention on some teams we're more familiar with that have a little bit more of a personal feeling for us, teams that we're wanting to get after."
Â
This marks the second year in a row the Red Raiders will open conference play in Waco. Last season, Tech took a set from the Lady Bears despite entering the match shorthanded. Hill and fellow outside hitter Chandler Atwood recorded 12 kills each, but Baylor's Katie Staiger went off for 20 kills to help Baylor to the win.
Â
This season, Baylor sophomore Yossiana Pressley has proven a dominant force. She leads the Big 12 in kills per set at 5.09, a mark that ranks fifth in the nation.
Â
Tech looks equipped for battle, entering conference as the Big 12's leader in opponent hitting percentage at .160. Tech ranks third in the league in blocks per set and in digs per set.
Â
While Hill has been Tech's top killer, middles Katy Keenan and Allison White have been the strength of the team. Keenan ranks ninth nationally in total blocks, while White ranks sixth in the nation in hitting percentage. Â
