RED RAIDER QUICK HITS
- In his 21st season of coaching, Tony Graystone earned the 500th victory of his career against Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The win marked his first victory against the Jayhawks. Graystone now boasts a 500-215 overall record and 60-55 mark at Texas Tech.
- Entering Saturday's match with 999 digs in her career, senior Emily Hill's next dig will place her in the 1,000 career-dig club. Once she collects the landmark dig, she will become one of four Red Raiders in program history to carry 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She collected 184 digs as a freshman at Mississippi State and posted 307 in her first season at Tech in 2017. Hill racked up 288 digs as a junior and she has already produced 220 digs this season.
- The Red Raiders' come-from-behind stinger on Wednesday marked the first Tech victory against the Jayhawks since Oct. 2, 2010. That performance was another thrilling five-setter that took place at the USA.
- Tech hosted its annual Dig Pink Match against Kansas at United Supermarkets Arena on Wednesday and one very special woman was recognized for her courageous battle against breast cancer. Lisa White, the mother of junior Allison White, was honored between the second and third sets after she was re-diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier this year.
- After a solid performance at Iowa State, freshman Caitlin Dugan picked up the first weekly award of her career and was named the Big 12 Volleyball Rookie of the Week, announced by the league on Monday. Rising to the occasion, she posted a team-leading 12 kills to help the Red Raiders to their first win at Iowa State since Sept. 25, 2004. Dugan, who finished the match with a .345 hitting percentage, ranked in the league's top 10 with 3.00 kills per set. The Gilbert, Ariz., native kicked off the match with six kills on a .500 hitting percentage in the first set, then helped Tech maintain its momentum with a pair of kills in the last three sets. Dugan also played her role at the net with three big block assists that came in the first, second and fourth sets. Putting on an even more impressive performance against Kansas, the freshman collected a season-high 16 kills on a .212 hitting percentage to go along with her four block assists.
- The Red Raiders have posted a trio of key wins against teams ranked higher in the NCAA Women's Volleyball RPI. Tech opened up the season with a clean sweep over VCU – who currently ranks 56th – before edging 47th-ranked Ohio State, 3-2. Tech's other victory against a higher-ranked team came last Saturday when they downed Iowa State (27th) by a score of 3-1 in Ames, Iowa.
- Serving as the heart of the offense, sophomore setter Alex Kirby set two career highs against Kansas on Wednesday. The Knoxville, Tenn., native collected 53 assists and she doubled her career record with six blocks against the Jayhawks.
- In addition to her dig count, Emily Hill is approaching two other milestones on the floor. The senior is just 10 kills away from reaching 1,500 kills. Additionally, she is just three blocks away from the 200th of her career.
- Karrington Jones has shown consistent growth since arriving at Texas Tech and now she leads the Red Raiders with 16 solo blocks. Jones has accumulated 51 block assists and heads into the weekend ranked seventh in the league with a team-high 1.05 blocks per set. The sophomore from Little Elm, Texas, carries 108 kills through 64 sets and eighth in the Big 12 with a .316 hitting percentage.
- Picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll, Texas Tech has posted three victories over higher-seeded conference opponents. Tech has topped fourth-ranked Iowa State (3-1), Kansas State (3-0) and Kansas (3-2) in the front half of Big 12 play.
- You're not just seeing things. Freshmen Lauren Dodson and Lindsey Dodson are one of the few pairs of sisters to grace the Texas Tech volleyball program. The Dodsons are the first set of twins that head coach Tony Graystone has ever coach in his now 21st season of coaching.
- After a stellar outing at the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts, sophomore Brooke Kanas became the fourth Red Raider in program history to earn a spot on the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team. She spent June 23-29 training with the nation's domestic program in Anaheim, Calif. She is the youngest Red Raider to have spent a summer training with the U.S. Collegiate National Team.
- The Texas Tech volleyball team was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as an Academic Honor Roll Team after the squad posted a top-25 cumulative grade point average among all Division I institutions for the 2018-19 academic year. The prestigious honor was achieved thanks to a historic year in the classroom. In the fall, Tech placed a program-record 10 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Teams – nine first-team selections and one second-team nod. The Red Raiders also paced the Big 12 for the second straight year as four student-athletes recorded 4.00 grade point averages.
