October 19, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
Senior standout Emily Hill earned the 1,000th dig and 1,500th kill of her career.
WACO, Texas – Senior Emily Hill reached a pair of career milestones as the Texas Tech volleyball team (14-7, 4-3 Big 12) dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 1 Baylor, Saturday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.
Â
Hill picked up the 1,000th dig and 1,500th kill of her career in a 13-kill, seven-dig performance against the top-ranked Bears. Thanks to her efforts, Hill is now one of four Red Raiders in program history to record 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in their career.
Â
Hill was the only Red Raider to reach double-digit kills and Allison White was the closest Red Raider with six. Emerson Solano and Katy Northcut finished the match with 16 and 15 digs, respectively, and White led the Red Raiders with four total blocks.
Â
The Red Raiders claimed the opening point thanks to a quick block from White and Brooke Kanas. The Bears responded with a pair of points, but Tech kept the set even thanks to White's first kill of the match. Collecting her first of seven digs, Hill quickly broke through the 1,000 career-dig mark and a kill from the senior on the following play brought the Red Raiders within three points at 7-4. The Denton, Texas, native broke up five Baylor points with her second kill of the match and sophomore Karrington Jones followed up with a kill on the right side. After falling behind by eight points, Tech tried to rally late in the set with four straight points, but the Red Raiders were unable to respond and they dropped the first set 25-19.
Â
SET TWO: Baylor 25, Texas Tech 21
Another Red Raider block – this time at the hands of White and Alex Kirby – opened up the second stanza and Tech stayed neck-and-neck with the top-ranked Bears throughout the entirety of the set. Kills from Hill, White, Kirby and Kanas kept the two teams tied at 7-7 and a commanding kill from Caitlin Dugan gave Tech its 10th point of the set. After falling behind 15-10, the Red Raiders fought back and used a 7-2 run to tie up the match at 17-all. A monster block by Kanas and White kept Tech within one point of the Bears and Hill's ninth kill of the match interrupted Tech's late-set run. After bringing the match within three points, Baylor put away the second set 25-21 and Tech fell behind 2-0 in the match.
Â
SET THREE: Baylor 25, Texas Tech 19
Two kills from Dugan and a Baylor service error kept the third set even at 3-3, and a trio of Bear errors and a kill from White kept the match within one point. Hills's 10th kill of the match cut into Baylor's lead 13-9 and also registered as the 1,500th kill of her four-year career. A block from Jones and Hill broke up a 4-1 run for the Bears and Hill one-upped the play with her 11th kill of the day. Tech notched back-to-back points on a kill from Kirby and a Baylor error, and Hill posted two more kills to make it a three-point set at 19-16. Despite the late comeback attempt, the Red Raiders couldn't hang on and Tech dropped the final set 25-19 to the No. 1 ranked Baylor Bears. With the loss, Tech falls to 14-7 on the season and 4-3 in Big 12 Conference play.
