Texas Tech’s four captains chosen from a group of 16 captains that were elected for the 2019 season

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced Thursday the captains for the Big 12 home opener as the Red Raiders return home to host No. 21 Oklahoma State on Saturday at 11 a.m., inside Jones AT&T Stadium.

Of the 16 captains elected prior to the start of the season, Jordyn Brooks, Broderick Washington Jr., Thomas Leggett and Erik Ezukanma will represent the Red Raiders during the coin toss against the Cowboys. Ezukanma is making his first appearance at midfield while the other three are receiving their second nods.

Brooks has been arguably one of the top linebackers in the nation this year as he ranks among the nation leaders with 41 tackles. The Houston native ranks 10^th for tackles for loss per game (1.6), 13^th for total tackles per game (10.30 and 17^th in solo tackles per game (6.0). The 2018 honorable mention All-Big 12 pick racked up his 300^th career tackle against Oklahoma and ranks fifth among active power-five players.

Washington Jr. is only second behind Brooks in career starts on defense with 29 in his career, proving to be a consistent force on the defensive line. Honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2018, he is among the team leaders in tackles for loss this season with three and leads the defensive front with 15 tackles for the year, which ranks tied for fourth on the team overall.

Leggett has moved up the depth chart and started the last two games at the Spur position on defense. The Navarre, Fla., native is coming off a career-high six tackles at Oklahoma, which ranked second on the team. The 2018 Academic All-Big 12 second teamer currently is currently tied for third in the secondary in tackles this year.

Ezukanma is one of three redshirt freshmen captains for the Red Raiders. The talented wideout has made two starts this year and ranks second among outside receivers in catches and receiving yards.
