Red Raiders playing for potential Big 12 title Thursday night at home.
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 15 Texas Tech will host Kansas State at the John Walker Soccer Complex Thursday night for an exciting Halloween matchup with a potential Big 12 regular season championship on the line. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Â
To determine the title, the result in Lubbock will be compared to the score in Stillwater, where conference leader Oklahoma State will play Baylor, also at 7 p.m. A win by Tech would clinch the title should OSU drop its game to the Bears. A win by Tech and a tie by the Cowgirls would leave the two squads as co-champions. The cards lie in the hands of the current leaders, though, as a win by them would clinch it regardless of what the Red Raiders do.
Â
"We have to post a big result to put ourselves in position," said head coach Tom Stone. "If Baylor and Oklahoma State do anything that doesn't involve OSU straight out winning, then we have a chance at the trophy. We know that, but we're not making too big of a deal out of it because we don't control Oklahoma State. We do, however, control our game, and we have to have a big performance because K-State hasn't been easy for anyone this year."
That sentiment was echoed by the players.Â
"We just need to focus on ourselves," said forward Macy Schultz. "If the other game turns out, the other game turns out. We need to take care of our business and get the win."
Â
Thursday will mark the third-ever meeting between Texas Tech and Kansas State since the Wildcats' inaugural season in 2017. Tech has won both meetings against the newly-founded program and holds a goal differential of 5-1. Tech's first meeting with K-State was at The Walker in 2017, where the Red Raiders put up three scores to the Wildcats' one. Last season, the Red Raiders downed KSU in Manhattan thanks to second half goals from Kirsten Davis and Jade King.
Â
The 15th-ranked Red Raiders are coming off a huge two-game road sweep over Baylor and Texas, picking up their first wins on the road there since 2007 and 2012, respectively. Tech was led by Davis in Waco, who netted both goals en route to the blowout. In Austin, the team's Big 12 title hopes were slowly inching away until Charlotte Teeter headed in the tying goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Five minutes into overtime, Teeter found freshman Schultz for the golden goal winner.
Â
For the weekend performance, three Red Raiders were honored by the Big 12, making for a Tech sweep of the weekly conference awards. Teeter was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while the Defensive Player of the Week nod went to Madison White, who was stellar in net and made 13 saves. For her game-winner against the Longhorns, Schultz was named Freshman of the Week.Â
Â
"It's always an honor to be recognized by your league and especially by a league as competitive as ours," said Stone. "You look around this league and there are so many great players that have great moments. We were fortunate this week to have several players step up in one big two-game weekend."
Â
Tech's tilt with the Wildcats is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex. For Halloween, kids will have the chance to participate in a trunk-or-treat in the complex's parking lot, beginning at 6 p.m. until game time. Also, free coffee and hot chocolate will be provided to all fans, courtesy of Dunkin'.
