Red Raiders, Horned Frogs to compete for chance at Big 12 Championship.
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 13 Texas Tech will meet TCU in Kansas City on Friday for the semifinal of the Big 12 Tournament. The Red Raiders are fresh off a dominant first round victory over Baylor last weekend.
To make a run at their second Big 12 title, the Red Raiders will have to go through the Horned Frogs, who edged out a 2-1 win over Tech in October. It was Tech's lone conference loss on the season. However, the Red Raiders are looking for a potential repeat of last fall, where they avenged a regular season loss to TCU by knocking them out of the conference tournament on penalty kicks.
With this the goal, the attitude amongst the team reflects confidence.
"TCU was a good game, but they did take points away from us," said Kirsten Davis, who Tuesday was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. "The Big 12 Tournament is fun because it doesn't matter what happened in the regular season. It's just another game, and what matters is who shows up that day and who can win out the game."
Head coach Tom Stone echoed his players' sentiments, saying, "They deserve credit for that win, but it's a new day and a new time of the year. I think we're playing better than we have all year – and I'm sure they are – but tournament time is different."
To dispatch the Horned Frogs, Tech will take with it the conference's best forward and goalkeeper. Those titles, given to Davis and Madison White, respectively, were bestowed by the Big 12 coaches and confirmed by the statistics. Davis led the league in points (36), goals (15) and game-winning goals (five). In the time between her being selected and the awards being publicly announced, she extended her lead on the conference in all three categories with her game-winner over the Bears in the quarterfinals. White on the other hand, led the conference in goals-against average (0.52) and save percentage (.880) in her 11 games.
Tech also tied the program record with four First Team selections (Davis, White, Jordie Harr and Cassie Hiatt) and three All-Freshman Team selections (White, Hannah Anderson and Macy Schultz). Together, this Red Raider group has advanced the 2019 team to the second weekend of tournament play for the fifth time in seven years.
Six-seed TCU wound up in the semis after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer against three-seed Texas. The two went to penalties, where the Horned Frogs would only need three chances to send the Longhorns home after the visitors from Austin missed three straight.
First touch for the highly anticipated semifinal contest is set for 7 p.m. at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. It will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Live stats will be available here. Tickets are for sale here.
