December 04, 2019 | Men's Basketball
CHICAGO – The fight was there, but for the third straight game, the result was not.
Texas Tech suffered an overtime defeat for the second straight game after falling 65-60 to DePaul after being tied at 53 through regulation on Wednesday in the Big 12-Big East Battle at the Wintrust Arena. The Red Raiders (5-3) will return to action against No. 1-ranked Louisville at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.
"There were times in the second half where I thought we were in control of the game but it was a back-and-forth battle," Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said. "Give DePaul credit. When it mattered most, they made the big plays. I thought we played with a lot of grit and fight. It was our first road game and in a great environment. I was proud of our effort, but we just have to play better. We came to win, but just came up short."
Terrence Shannon, Jr. scored a career-high 24 points on 9-for-18 shooting and also had eight rebounds, but a Jalen Coleman-Lands 3-pointer for DePaul to end regulation sent the game to overtime and two more from him in overtime proved to be too much in the loss. Tech was coming off an 83-76 overtime loss to Creighton last Friday and has now lost three straight after opening the season with five wins. DePaul improved to 9-0 on the season and to 3-0 all-time against the Red Raiders who played without leading scorer Jahmi'us Ramsey who missed his second straight game with a hamstring injury.
A freshman from Chicago, Shannon scored his career-high 24 points and after having two previous games with 13. He hit two 3-pointers in the game and also went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line for his 24 points. Kyler Edwards added 12 and Chris Clarke recorded double-digit rebounds for the third time this season with 11. and also led the team with four assists. Davide Moretti, who is now 24-for-25 from the free-throw line this season, scored 10 points that included going 7-for-8 from the line against the Blue Demons. Avery Benson matched his career-high with six points and also added five rebounds for the Red Raiders who owned a 41-37 rebounding advantage in the game.
In overtime, Tech led 57-53 with 2:08 remaining after a Shannon layup before Coleman-Lands made a 3-pointer to cut it to one and then another two possessions later to give the Blue Demons a 61-60 lead with 55 seconds on the clock. Coleman-Lands would knock down two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to make it a three-point game and was followed by Shannon missing a long-range 3-pointer on the other end. A defensive rebound by Charlie Moore for the Blue Demons and two subsequent free throws ended the game at 65-60.
Texas Tech also had a four point lead in regulation when Edwards made a layup with 38 seconds to play and were up two with Moretti getting fouled and going to the line with 17 seconds. Moretti made the first of two free throws to give the Red Raiders a 53-50 lead before Coleman-Lands hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to force overtime. The Red Raiders had a turnover after the 3-pointer with the ball being deflected across mid-court as time ran out.
"There's no one I'd rather have on the free throw line than Moro," Beard said. "He puts in a lot of time and is one of the best shooters I've ever coached. There's never been a guy that's played this game and shot 100 percent from the line. Even the best shooters miss from time-to-time. We are a no-excuse culture and that wasn't the reason we came up short. We have to have a defense that is good enough to earn the right to win games like this."
The Red Raiders finished the game shooting 39.6 percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers, while the Blue Demons shot 39.7 percent and had only 12 turnovers. Coleman-Lands finished the game with 18 points after making four 3-pointers and Paul Reed also had 18 and also had seven rebounds. Jaylen Butz finished with 17 points and seven rebounds and Moore led the team with five steals but was limited to only six points.
Texas Tech led 26-23 at halftime despite committing 11 turnovers and being limited to 36.0 percent shooting. Shannon and Benson led the Red Raiders with six points each, while Clarke had six rebounds, three assists and two points at the break while Edwards was at five points and three rebounds. The Blue Demons were shooting 36.0 percent from the field and struggling at the line at 3-for-8. Tech was 5-for-5 on free-throws in the first half with Shannon and Moretti each having two and Benson knocking down another.
The Red Raider, who owned a 21-14 rebounding advantage after 20 minutes, led by as many as seven points in the first half when Clarke made a layup on a second-chance basket with 10:26 on the clock after being down four just three minutes into the game. Tech was on an 11-3 run that gave it an 11-6 lead on a Clarence Nadolny layup and was up 14-7 when Edwards drilled the third 3-pointer of the half for the Red Raiders after an offensive rebound from Shannon. Tied at 22 with two minutes remaining in the half, Shannon hit a runner in the lane and then a layup with 34 seconds remaining. The Blue Demons connected on a 3-pointer that was originally counted but then reversed after review showing that the shot was after the buzzer. Tech, which missed its first five shots before 3-pointers by Benson and Moretti, finished the first half shooting 3-for-10 on 3-pointers and with a halftime lead for the first time in three games.
Butz and Reed led the Blue Demons with nine points each at the break. DePaul was only 2-for-10 on 3-pointers but had five blocks defensively.
DePaul now play Buffalo on Sunday, which is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
