Postgame Quotes: Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss
December 04, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Texas Tech Lady Raider Head Coach Marlene Stollings
Opening statement...
"Big win for our program, this was a turning point game for us. Not only did we beat the SEC, but we're still undefeated. One of the very few teams in the nation that are still undefeated. As we rebuild this program, it's moments in games like this that become very powerful in our movement and our movement to March, quite frankly. I was most impressed with our defense tonight, we mixed up alot of different things and did an incredible job defensively. I was impressed with that piece. We took care of the ball and obviously we generated a lot of offense off of our defense. Just incredibly proud of this group."
On winning in a certain way, rather than just winning...
"It's very important and we've been talking about that in virtually every game thus far. It's not just that you win, it's how you win and how many you win by and all that matters for postseason play, which we have our eyes set on post season play. That will come into play down the stretch, it's not just to win, but to win in dominant fashion when we can."
On pushing the game out of reach...
"I think we're getting better and better each game, but certainly tonight it stood out. I thought we had a lot of energy, we play off of our crowd. Great crowd again, I want to thank our fans, they were just tremendous and I'm excited to continue to grow our fan base. But yes, we were moving at a very good pace and disrupting. That was part of our game plan, we thought that we could disrupt them and we could pressure them and if we could sustain that the duration of the game, then we would definitely have an advantage in that area."
On high expectations early on...
"You'll recall when I got here, I said I'm not very patient with turnarounds. Again, we have a lot of basketball to play and we know that, but we like where we're at right now. We're going to be very aggressive in our turnarounds and the only way to do that is to have great talent around you, both as a staff and student athletes. We're certainly in a good place in our rebuild and I love where we're headed and I really like what we've done up to this point."
On Sydney's aggression...
"A returner that's fired up to play in this challenge game and we put her on their best player and she guarded Deja Cage man-to-man virtually the entire night, minus a few possessions. She took great pride in that and Deja Cage could never get in a flow, she ends up with two points for the game. That was crucial in our game planning and she did an outstanding job on her. Syd doing that defensively, she gets excited for those types of challenges. Her game offensively, she was able to get into some good positions there, because she was playing aggressive the entire time."
On selfishness and confidence on the rest of the season...
"They must for our success. We're going to be undersized sometimes. We're always going to share the ball, that's apart of our culture and our ladies are bought into that. Rebounding is effort, heart, and energy and we have to be really bought into that. We have to continue to play at that level to play the style that we want. So, those two areas are apart of our culture and how we want to play. It's important that night in and night out we treat those with great care and we follow through with those goals."
Â
Senior, Forward Brittany Brewer
On how they dealt with Ole Miss' size…
"We knew we had to be more physical than them. Definitely be the aggressor and not take stuff but hand it to them. That's what our scouting report was and that's what we did."
On if they feel the need to make still make statement games…
"I think there is always room for statement games. I think we could put ourselves on the map with a win like this. If we keep steamrolling from here we will be really good."
Â
Freshman, Guard Alexis Tucker
On how they dealt with Ole Miss' size…
"I would say we knew our personnel and we knew that we had the speed. We made sure that we would tire them out when we get running up and down the floor."
Â
Junior, Guard Sydney Goodson
On comparison from last year's team to this team….
"I think the difference is that we are very bought in and we are consistent. I think everyone shows up every day and wants to work hard. We have the same goal and the same mindset. Coach said we wanted to make a statement tonight and we did. I think we did a good job of that. We have to keep momentum moving forward with the great team that we have."
On Sydney's aggression tonight…
"I think this season in bigger because I am a returner and I know what to expect. I think specifically this game, to represent the Big 12 was huge. I think it got all of us excited. It felt pretty good to hit that and-one three, I have got to tell ya."
Â
Sophomore Guard Chrislyn Carr
On what allowed the team to get out and run…
"I would say definitely our energy on defense. Also, know where everyone is at and personnel."
Â
Ole Miss Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin
Opening statement…
"I'm just disappointed with our lack of fight and commitment to what we wanted to do defensively. I thought that, if we didn't do that, what would happen, would happen. We can't score with people who can, so we have to get stops. I don't think we that tonight."
Â
On Texas Tech's offense…
"They made shots. They got out in transition and we didn't get back. So, that was our game plan - we wanted to make them play in the half court. They just out-willed us for 40 minutes."
Â
On Ole Miss' struggles tonight…
"I don't want to have an excuse. We just didn't come to play and Texas Tech did. They are a high-powered offense and we're not. When you play a team that's a high-powered offense, you have to minimize the possessions, and we didn't. I feel like they had double our possessions in the first half, so the game plan definitely went to shreds. My team is young. We're in year two like Texas Tech, but they have a pro in Brittany Brewer and a Freshman of the Year returner and we don't. In order for us to be able to compete with teams like this, we have to be able to get stops and really dig deep. I don't think we did that tonight."
Â
On what the offense can do to adjust for the next game…
"Nothing. We can't score 84 points if no one's on the court. It's not about offense, it's about defense. You know that from Texas Tech's men's team. So, we're not here to get into a scoring bout, we need to be able to get stops. I don't think our team knows that, but maybe they'll learn it from this game."
