Culver Earns Big 12 Player of the Week

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore Jarrett Culver has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week after leading the Red Raiders with 26 points in the 91-62 win over No. 12 Kansas last Saturday. Culver has now won two Big 12 POW awards this season where he is averaging 18.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
Culver finished with 26 points against the Jayhawks after going 10-for-21 from the field, including three 3-pointers. It was the fifth game this season where he has made three or more 3-pointers and his second straight. A Lubbock native, he also added four assists in the victory over KU and now has 99 assists on the season. Culver's 26 points also took his career total to 901 points in 64 games as a Red Raider.
He earned his first Big 12 Player of the Week honor on Dec. 17, 2018 after scoring a career-high 30 points against Abilene Christian. He has now scored in double-figures in 13 straight games after matching his Big 12 scoring record with 26 that he also had last year as a freshman at West Virginia. Culver has scored 20 or more points in nine games this season and 11 in his career and is now averaging 16.9 points per game in Big 12 play going into Wednesday's home game against Oklahoma State.
Culver is on the John R. Wooden Award, Jerry West Award, Oscar Robertson Trophy and Lute Olson Award watch lists, was named to the Sporting News Midseason All-America second-team and earned Big 12 Preseason Honorable Mention honors. He joins Keenan Evans, Andre Emmett and Cory Carr as Red Raiders who have won two or more Big 12 Player of the Week honors in the same season. Evans won the award four times last season as a senior, while Emmett was a five-time winner in teh 2003-04 season and Carr won it twice in 1997-98.Â
Baylor's Jared Butler was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after he averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 assists in Baylor's two wins. He had team-highs of 17 points and five assists along with six rebounds and a steal in 36 minutes at No. 19 Iowa State. He made BU's last two field goals at ISU and converted a critical three-point play at the end of the WVU game.
