Men's tennis enters conference play at 13-7
HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated the Rice Owls by a score of 4-1 on Saturday to complete the 61st Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational with a 2-1 record.
The Red Raiders, for the second-straight match, took the doubles point to give themselves an early 1-0 advantage. Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov secured the first doubles match for Tech with a 6-3 decision on court two.
On court one, the No. 9 ranked duo of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn came back from a 1-6 deficit in a winner-takes-all tiebreaker to give Tech the doubles point.
In singles, Tech grabbed their second point of the afternoon with a win on court two by Wynn, who was recently ranked No. 99 in singles. The Red Raiders' third point was secured by freshman Franco Ribero, who continued to shine with a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set victory.
The fourth and decisive match point was notched by Thomson, who bounced back with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court four.
Tech will begin conference play with a trip to Austin on Friday, March 6th. The Red Raiders will then travel to Fort Worth before heading back home to finish the regular season with a three-game home stand.
