Texas Tech will look to rebound Sunday afternoon with its fourth-straight match against a Big Ten foe
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis had a difficult start to Spring Break on Friday evening as the 32nd-ranked Red Raiders suffered a 4-2 setback to Indiana at the IU Tennis Center.
Â
The Red Raiders, now 9-6 on the year, were previously coming off a Sunday sweep of fellow Big Ten foes Iowa and Nebraska this past Sunday at home before running into difficulties with the Hoosiers. Indiana improved 8-6 overall with the win.
Â
Tech's struggles began in doubles as Carson Haskins and Brandon Lam secured the point for the Hoosiers following a 6-4 upset of the 6th-ranked tandem of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn. It marked only the duo's third loss in dual play this season as they entered with an 8-2 record.
Â
Indiana previously gained an early advantage thanks to a 6-1 victory from Bennett Crane and Zac Brodney over the Tech duo of Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov. Matheus Leite and Ilgiz Valiev were halted midway through their match with the set deadlocked at 4-4 from the No. 3 court.
Â
The Red Raiders managed two singles wins near the top of the lineup as Wynn topped Crane, 6-2, 7-5, while Valiev edged Haskins, 6-4, 7-5, to cut Indiana's lead to 3-2 with two matches remaining. The Hoosiers followed with a three-set victory from Vikash Singh over Cobb (6-2, 2-6, 6-0) on the No. 6 court to clinch the victory.
Â
Thomson had already broken serve with Brodney in the third set of his match on the No. 4 court when the Hoosiers sealed the win. Thomson won his opening set, 6-3, over Brodney, who rebounded with a 7-5 victory in the second frame. He led 2-0 in the third set when the match was halted.
Â
The Red Raiders will look to rebound Sunday as Tech will remain in Big Ten country to face No. 45 Northwestern. First serve is slated for noon
