Men’s tennis finishes with 15 wins in the spring, including six against ranked foes
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 22 Texas Tech men's tennis team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after dropping a 4-1 contest to UC Santa Barbara in first round action at the Stanford Regional.
The Red Raiders (15-12) made the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years under head coach Brett Masi. The 2018-19 season was the second time in the last three years that the Red Raiders have recorded at least 15 wins. UCSB (17-6) will advance to face No. 12 Stanford in the second round on Saturday.
"Tough way to end the season," head coach Brett Masi said. "Our guys fought hard today. We played a great doubles point and I thought that would give us momentum, but UCSB stole it from us and come out hot in singles. We fought hard to the end."
Tech snagged the doubles point to open the match with wins by Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov, followed by No. 9 Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn on courts two and one, respectively. It was the 17th time this season the Red Raiders secured the initial match point in doubles play, and only the fourth time they failed to win the match after doing so.
In total, Cobb and Mylnikov notched 14 doubles wins on the year, second only to Thomson and Wynn who tallied 15 in dual match play.
After grabbing the opening match point, the Gauchos would take control of singles play, beginning their run with a win on court four over Thomson by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Franco Ribero, who racked up a second-best 15 dual match wins during the spring, fell in straight sets on court five to give UCSB their second point of the afternoon.
Following a three-set comeback victory on court one, UCSB would take the final and decisive match point on court two, as No. 53 Joseph Guillin came from behind to defeat No. 102 Mylnikov by a count of 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.
"I'm proud of our guys for what they did this year," Masi said. "Hopefully we can look back on what we did well this year and figure out what we need to improve on and move forward toward next season."
Thomson and Wynn will return to action later this month, as they are set to participate in the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championship held from May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
