Red Raiders Resume Fall Schedule in Ohio

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's golf team will look to continue the strong start to its season next week at the Iverness Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday in Toledo, Ohio.
The Red Raiders opened the 2019-20 season by winning The Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach, including an individual championship from senior Sandy Scott. The 15-team tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 on Tuesday to conclude the event at the Iverness Country Club. Tech will be represented by Scott, Ludvig Aberg, Markus Braadlie, Kyle Hogan, Andy Lopez and Garrett Martin at the event.
No. 18-ranked Texas Tech will be competing against No. 8 Auburn, Michigan State, Ohio State, Missouri, Kennesaw State, Kent State, No. 15 LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, UNC-Wilmington, Missouri, St. Mary's, Toledo and Tennessee which earned the Iverness tournament championship last season. Twelve of the 15 teams finished in the Top 100 in the Golfstat final rankings and has three in the top-25 of the preseason Golfweek rankings.
The course will play out at 7,171 yards and is set up for par 71. The Inverness Club was founded in 1903, and along with the University of Toledo, served as host for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness will host the 2021 Solheim Cup and has also hosted four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur.
In their first of four fall tournaments, the Red Raiders secured The Carmel Cup championship by shooting 35-under to knock off Big 12 rivals Oklahoma, TCU and preseason No. 4-ranked Oklahoma State. Tech trailed OU by nine strokes after the opening round, but stormed back with a final round of 16-under to close out the title. Scott, who would leave Pebble Beach and fly straight to England for the Walker Cup, secured his second career victory at The Carmel Cup by shooting 70-67-65 – 202 at the 54-hole event. Scott finished the tournament at 14-under with his final round being a blistering 7-under with seven birdies during a bogey-free round. Following the win, Scott competed for Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup, winning both of his individual matches and leading GB&I in individual points.
Along with Scott, junior Andy Lopez had a strong start to the season with a third-place finish. A Plano native in his second season at Tech, Lopez shot 71-65-69 –205 for his first top-5 finish with the Red Raiders. Lopez finished the season-opening event with 13 birdies. Kyle Hogan finished 13th at 5-under, followed by Jansen Smith who was at 1-under and claimed 20th. Aberg and Scott are both on the Golf Channel's Preseason Haskins Award Watch list after impressive summers that included the U.S. Amateur Championship. Aberg, a freshman from Sweden, shot 3-over and finished 28th at The Carmel Cup in his first collegiate event while Braadlie also shot 3-over at the event to begin his sophomore season. Braadlie fired a round of 3-under in the final round at Pebble Beach with four birdies to close out the season-opening event. Martin, a freshman from San Antonio, will be playing in his first tournament at Texas Tech.
Among professional players who have competed at the Iverness Intercollegiate are Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Nick Watney, Graeme McDowell, Jimmy Walker, Alex Noren, Hunter Mahan, Jonas Blixt Billy Horschel, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Jamie Lovemark, Adam Hadwin and J.B. Holmes.
Texas Tech will return to action at the Big 12 Match Play from Oct. 11-13 in Houston before closing out the fall schedule at the Tavistock Collegiate from Oct. 20-22 in Orlando, Florida.
