Red Raiders Drop Weekend Opener to No. 13 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – The Texas Tech volleyball team came up short on Friday afternoon against No. 13 Iowa State, falling 3-1 to the Cyclones.

Samantha Sanders led the Red Raider offense with 11 kills on the night—a high since transferring to Texas Tech prior to the season. Sanders also added eight digs and a pair of service aces. Caitlin Dugan added eight kills along with two blocks.

Allison Bloss added three blocks along with six kills on a .750 hitting percentage, five digs and an ace. Alex Kirby also posted three blocks while also recording 33 assists and five digs. Libero Emerson Solano recorded 13 digs to anchor the Tech defense.

Iowa State led wire to wire in the opening set, jumping out to a 2-0 lead to open the match and eventually building its lead to as large as eight on the way to a 25-17 set victory.

The Red Raiders used a 6-0 run midway through the second frame to take control of the set. Dugan led the way with four kills in the set, while Bloss ended up with three kills and three blocks to help Tech to a 25-21 set victory. It would end up being the Red Raiders best set of the night, statistically, as they posted a .258 hitting percentage and combined for four total blocks.

After Iowa State ran off a 25-13 win in the third set, the Red Raiders and Cyclones traded blows back and forth in the fourth frame.

There were seven lead changes and nine ties in the set, but the Cyclones would go on a 4-1 run late to take a 20-16 lead. Tech responded with a 3-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to one, but it was too late as Iowa State ran off four-straight points to end the match.

The Red Raiders will look to bounce back on Saturday at 12:30 when they return to Hilton Coliseum for another chance at the 13th-ranked Cyclones. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
