Men’s and women’s teams open season at Cowboy Jamboree.
STILLWATER, Okla. – Texas Tech cross country kicked off its fall campaign Saturday at Oklahoma State's Cowboy Jamboree. Both the men's and women's squad finished eighth in the team standings with 245 points apiece.
"The best part of the meet was that we were a part of it," said head coach Jon Murray. "It was great to be able to have the team back in a competitive situation. Overall it was a nice start to the year. It was a good experience for both groups and we have a place to start our building process."
Binta Ka led a women's squad that placed two inside the top-30 scorers. Ka ran a 23:02.9 6k to place 30th and pick up 28 points in the process. Jazmyn Martinez crossed at the exact moment Ka did, scoring 29 points in the process. Claudrice McKoy's 23:24.6 netted her 46th place and 44 points for Tech. She was followed by Sydney White (81stplace) and Kyra Young (91st) to round out scoring.
The men's group was led by a pair of freshmen. Edward Rush paced the Red Raiders in his collegiate debut, completing his 8k in 25:51.2 to secure 38 points for his squad. Paul Sherrill was six seconds behind his fellow freshman, crossing in 25:57.9 for a 48th-place, 41-point performance. Cornelius Kiprotich opened his season with a 26:03.8 showing for 59th place. Bennett Barnett (26:21.6) and Eric Maclean (26:26.1) rounded out scoring, placing 67th and 70th, respectively.
The Red Raiders will continue their season Oct. 17 at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational.
