Kiprotich, Ka lead Texas Tech in Lawrence.
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Texas Tech cross country wrapped its season Friday at the Big 12 Championships. The men's group tallied 187 points to place sixth while the women's team's 238 points was worthy of eighth.
Cornelius Kiprotich led the men's group, followed by a slew of underclassmen scorers. Kiprotich turned in a time of 25:11.9 to secure 33 points. Two places and three seconds behind him was freshman Thomas Velvin, whose 25:14.6 was good for 35 points. A pair of sophomores, Richard Taylor (25:41.5) and Eric Maclean (25:45.2) placed top-50 and scored 38 and 40 points, respectively. Freshman Paul Sherrill rounded out scoring with his 25:46.6 and 41 points.
Just outside of counted scoring spots were junior Bennett Barnett (26:05.8) and freshman Owen Likins (26:08.2).
"This was a strong overall performance by the men," said head coach Jon Murray. "It was exciting to see a few personal bests on a difficult course. Being able to get a sixth-place finish speaks well to the character of the team. The future is bright for this group."
Binta Ka led Tech's women for the first time in her career. The junior tallied 36 points with her 38th-place time of 22:30.7. As she has been all year, Ka, was joined by Jazmyn Martinez as frontrunners for the Lady Raiders. Martinez crossed nearly simultaneously with Ka in 22:30.8, good for 37 points. Sydney White was next for Tech, scoring 48 points with her 23:22.1. Kaitlyn Irving (23:43.4, 55 points) and Hanna Sanchez (24:32.3, 62 points) rounded out the scorers for the eighth-place unit.
Kyra Young was outside of scoring position with her 24:59.7.
"I was proud of the ladies today," said Murray. "This was a tough course and they each competed well. The group has handled any of the obstacles given to them this year in a classy way."
