Red Raiders Fall to No. 9 Mountaineers at Home

Late goal not enough as Tech drops game to West Virginia.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (0-2-2) fell at the hands of No. 9 West Virginia (4-1-0) Friday night, 2-1.
"I think we got down in their end several times, but we made some poor decisions on how to set it up and pull the trigger," said head coach Tom Stone. "You can't get in the red zone that many times and not get shots off. That was definitely a problem for us and something we'll have to address this week."
Tech got on the board late, scoring their third second-half goal of the season. Kirsten Davis was responsible, curling in a ball off a free kick straight from the training ground. As Jen Rose sprinted toward the ball, Charlotte Teeter pushed it to the side as Davis got a running start before connecting with it while looking at a wide-open path to net. Her shot beat the West Virginia keeper left side, making it 2-1 in the 88th minute.
Tech's late life – both of the Red Raiders' non-penalty kick goals this season have come in the final two minutes of regulation – was not enough to surmount a two-goal Mountaineer lead. The ninth-ranked visitors got started right after halftime when Julianne Vallerand turned around after grabbing a ball in the box and beat keeper Madison White to open scoring.
White redeemed herself just two minutes later with Tech in trouble. A handball in the box awarded the Mountaineers a chance at going from tied to up two just three minutes into the half. Vallerand opted to take it, but White dove to her right side to make the save.
With Tech fighting for an equalizer, the Mountaineers found a way to double their lead in the 82nd minute with a score from Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel.
"We understand that we have a very good team," Stone concluded. "We're looking forward to finishing the second half of the Big 12 season, but at the same time it's time to be desperate for points if we want to make moves in the league standings."
Davis' score was the 25th of her collegiate career. She is two from tying Jessica Fuston (2010-13) for fifth in program history. Teeter's assist on the free kick puts her at five points this season.
Tech will hit the road in search of a win next week, heading to Fort Worth for a matchup with TCU. The game, scheduled for 7 p.m., will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
