Red Raiders Defeat Sooners in Gritty Four-Set Performance

Texas Tech volleyball got back into the win column Thursday night against Oklahoma
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team fought off four consecutive set points in the fourth set to complete a gritty 3-1 win over Oklahoma Thursday night at United Supermarkets Arena.
Texas Tech (4-9) defeated Oklahoma (2-7) 25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 27-25 to break a six-match losing streak.
Samantha Sanders finished one kill shy of her career-best with 23 in the match. Caitlin Dugan had another big night for the Red Raiders with 16 kills. Emerson Solano moved into fifth place in Texas Tech history in digs with 1,285 in her career, surpassing Melissa McGehee. Solano finished the night with 19 digs.
Tech opened the first set strong with a 15-9 lead at the first media timeout. The Red Raiders increased their lead out of the break as Sanders registered back-to-back kills to force the Sooners to take a timeout down 18-12. Oklahoma wouldn't go away easily, fighting back within three to make Tech take a timeout at 20-17. The Red Raiders buckled down out of the timeout and finished off the first set 25-19.
The Sooners jumped on the Red Raiders quickly in the second set, using a 5-0 run to force an early Tech timeout at 6-1. The Red Raiders pulled back in, tying things up at 13 with an ace from Dugan before taking the lead on an Oklahoma error. The two sides would trade points for the duration of the set until an attack error by the Red Raiders created a set point for the Sooners, who finished things off to even things up after two sets.
The Red Raiders responded in the third set, capitalizing on the Sooners' errors taking a 19-14 lead. Oklahoma pulled its way back in, cutting the lead to 21-19. Tech refocused and scored four of the next six points to win the third, 25-21.
The fourth set was controlled by Oklahoma for first half of the frame, taking an 11-4 lead over the Red Raiders. Tech continued to trail by five until kills from Allison Bloss, Sanders, and Alex Kirby cut the deficit to three, 20-17. A pair of service errors from the Red Raiders caused Tech to use a timeout down 23-19. The Red Raiders regrouped out of the timeout to fight off four set points to tie things up at 24. The Sooners again reached set point at 25-24, but Tech battled once again to force another tie. With the Red Raiders serving, Sanders slammed the door with the final two points of the match for the Texas Tech win.
The Red Raiders return to United Supermarkets Arena Friday evening at 4 p.m. for the second match against the Sooners.
