Red Raiders Fall to Jayhawks in Four Sets

Texas Tech dropped the first of two matches against Kansas in Lawrence.
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The Texas Tech volleyball team dropped its opening match of the weekend against Kansas on Thursday night. The Red Raiders (5-10) fell in four sets to the Jayhawks (4-9), 21-25, 13-25, 26-24, 20-25.
Caitlin Dugan paced the Red Raiders with another 16 kill performance. Dugan (16 kills, 11 digs) and Reese Rhodes (34 assists, 10 digs) each finished with a double-double. Rhodes recorded a career-high seven kills with a .412 hitting percentage. Mackenzie Morgan tied her career-best with six kills while adding a team-leading 16 digs, also a career-high.
The Jayhawks claimed a tight first set which saw 11 ties and five lead changes. The Red Raiders did not take the lead until a kill from Rhodes at 14-14 put Tech in front by one. The Jayhawks tied things up at 17 after a couple of Tech errors, forcing the Red Raiders to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, back-to-back errors from Kansas gave Tech the one-point advantage. With Tech leading 19-18 the Jayhawks used a 3-0 run to pull ahead 21-19. A few more Tech errors and a Kansas ace gave the Jayhawks the 25-21 opening set win.
The second set was all Kansas, as the Jayhawks cruised to a 25-13 win. The Red Raiders struggled to find their footing with 11 errors in the frame.
Tech rebounded in the third set with a 26-24 win. Rhodes got things going for the Red Raiders with a pair of kills and a block to make it 10-8 Tech. Kansas surged back in front and kept the advantage until a kill from Morgan tied the set at 16. The Red Raiders used a 3-0 run to regain the lead, 18-16. Kansas called a timeout down 22-18 and used the break to regroup. The Jayhawks fought back to tie the match at 23 and again at 24 after defending a set point from the Red Raiders. Kills from Dugan and Samantha Sanders closed out the third set, forcing a fourth stanza.
After quickly falling behind 5-0 in the fourth set the Red Raiders battled back and tied things up at 8-8 on a kill from Cadi Boyer. The Jayhawks gained a five-point advantage again, leading 15-10 at the media timeout. Allison Bloss recorded her career-high third ace of the night to force a Kansas timeout with the Jayhawks up 19-17. The Red Raiders pulled within one after an attack error from the Jayhawks. However, Kansas tallied six of the next nine points to win the fourth set, and the match.
Texas Tech returns to the Horejsi Center for its final match of the fall season Friday night at 6:30 p.m. CST. The match is available for streaming on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
