Texas Tech fell in four sets to the Jayhawks on Friday night in Kansas.
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The Texas Tech volleyball team fell in its fall finale to Kansas on Friday night in Lawrence. Tech (5-11) lost in four sets to Kansas (5-9), 17-25, 29-27, 17-25, 20-25.
"It was a tough weekend in Kansas, the Jayhawks played well," said head coach Tony Graystone. "I thought our team did a really nice job short-handed again with a brand-new lineup. A lot of players played positions they hadn't before, and I was really happy with our fight and effort. We pushed Kansas as much as we could, and I am proud of that effort."
Three Red Raiders tallied double-digit kills led by Caitlin Dugan with 12, Samantha Sanders with 11 and Reagan Cooper with 10. Dugan (12 kills, 10 digs), Sanders (11 kills, 10 digs) and Reese Rhodes (41 assists, 13 digs) each recorded double-doubles. Defensively, Cadi Boyer finished with seven blocks, one shy of tying her career high. Emerson Solano tied her season-high with 22 digs.
Kansas jumped on Tech in the first set after a 4-0 run put the Jayhawks up 19-12. The Jayhawks took a seven-point advantage at 21-14 but the Red Raiders fought back with three straight points to pull within four. Kansas rallied off the next four points to take set one, 25-17.
Kansas led the second set by as much as six points, but the Red Raiders showed incredible resilience to fight back and even up the match at one apiece. With the Jayhawks up 18-12, Tech subbed in Cooper who recorded three of the next five Red Raider points to cut the deficit to three at 20-17. After a timeout, the Red Raiders tallied the next five points to take a 22-21 lead. A kill from Dugan gave the Red Raiders a set point at 24-23, but Kansas fought it off and forced a set point of its own. After both sides traded points again, Tech earned another set point on a kill from Allison Bloss. Kansas battled once more to tie the set at 27. A kill from Cooper and a block from Boyer finally sealed the deal for the Red Raiders who took the second set in dramatic fashion, 29-27.
The third set mirrored the first with the Jayhawks jumping on the Red Raiders early. Kansas never trailed in the frame, leading by as much as eight, winning the set 25-17.
With the Jayhawks leading by eight in the fourth set, Sanders recorded three straight points including back-to-back aces to cut the Red Raider deficit to five at 16-11. Tech used a 3-0 run from Dugan and Boyer, who each recorded a kill and teamed up for a block, to bring the Red Raiders within three at 21-18. The Jayhawks ended the Red Raider rally with back-to-back points and eventually closed out the match with an ace as the ball hit the net and fell into no-mans-land.
Texas Tech fought through a trying fall season in which the Red Raiders never featured a fully healthy lineup. Seniors Haley Harman, Allison Bloss and Emerson Solano wrapped up their four-year careers and will not be returning for the spring season. Solano finishes her career ranked fourth in Texas Tech history with 1,333 digs. Bloss ends with the sixth most block assists in program history with 281.
The Red Raiders will continue their season in the spring with a schedule still to be determined.
