Texas Tech Splits Series at Houston

The Red Raiders defeated the Cougars Friday night following a loss on Thursday.
HOUSTON – After falling in Thursday's match, Texas Tech (6-12) responded with a five-set victory over Houston (8-2) Friday night to split the series.
The Red Raiders win Friday night was the third win in the last four meetings against the Cougars.
Houston 3, Texas Tech 0
The Cougars took Thursday's match against the Red Raiders in three sets, 25-17, 25-23, 26-24.
Houston used a 5-0 run after an 8-8 tie to jump out to an early lead in the first set. As the Red Raiders fought to stay in the set the Cougars strung together another five points to take a 21-12 advantage. Tech then rattled off three points of its own with kills from Kiari Gier and Samantha Sanders and an attack error from Houston. It was the Cougars, however, who tallied three straight points to close out the first set 25-17.
The Red Raiders regrouped for the second set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead early on. The Cougars responded and the two sides traded blows for the majority of the set. Texas Tech tied things at 19 after a kill from Brooke Kanas, but Houston used a 4-0 run to pull ahead late. Tech answered with a 3-0 run sparked by block assists from Alex Kirby and Karrington Jones and an ace from Mackenzie Morgan. The Red Raiders fought off one set point to pull within one, but a service error gave Houston a 2-0 lead in the match.
After falling behind to start, Texas Tech rattled off five straight points to take a 9-8 lead in the third set. Houston called a timeout and tallied four of the next five points to regain the lead, until kills from Caitlin Dugan and Sanders tied the set at 14 all. The two sides traded leads until things were tied up at 23 after a kill from Jones. The Cougars used back-to-back points capped off by a service ace to take the third set and the match.
Reagan Cooper finished the match with 11 kills and a .435 hitting clip.
Houston 2, Texas Tech 3
The Red Raiders responded on Friday with a five-set victory over the Cougars 25-21, 25-18, 16-25, 26-28, 15-10.
Tied up at 19 in the first set, Houston tallied the next two points to take a 21-19 advantage and force a Texas Tech timeout. The Red Raiders came out of the timeout fired up, winning the next six points to close out the first set.
Tech carried the momentum over into the second frame using a 4-0 run to take a 10-5 lead early on. The Red Raiders would command the set, taking as much as a 10-point advantage at 21-11. Though the Cougars would cut the lead down some, fighting off two set points late, a kill from Samantha Sanders gave the Red Raiders a 2-0 set lead.
The Cougars did not back down, taking the third set in commanding fashion, 25-16.
The fourth set was a battle both teams trading blows throughout the entirety of the frame. A kill from Reagan Cooper gave Texas Tech a match point at 24-22. The Cougars fought off a pair of match points and tied things up at 24 all. The Red Raiders would earn two more match points, but Houston battled back with three straight points to take the fourth set 28-26 and force a deciding set.
Tech took command in the final set, using a 3-0 run to jump out to an 8-4 lead and force a Houston timeout. Big blocks and a kill from Sanders helped the Red Raider claim a victory with a 15-10 win in the fifth set.
Sanders led the Red Raiders with a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs. Cooper recorded a career-high 15 kills, besting the previous career high she set in Thursday's match. She also finished with a career best five total blocks with three solo and two block assists. Kirby finished the match with a double-double of 47 assists and 12 digs while contributing four blocks. Jones did a little bit of everything tallying eight kills, one assist, one ace, four digs and five blocks. Four Red Raiders finished with double-digit digs with Lindsey Dodson and Katy Northcut leading the way with 15 apiece.
