THE SERIES
- The Lady Raiders and Jaguars will be meeting for only the second time in the two programs' histories when the two teams collide on Saturday.
- Tech won that only previous meeting, 76-58, in Lubbock on Dec. 18, 2018.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball team picked up its first Big 12 win of the season on Saturday afternoon, coming back to defeat TCU, 78-72, at United Supermarkets Arena. The Lady Raiders (4-2, 1-1 Big 12) were down as many as 16 points in the win, and trailed for 25 of the game's 40 minutes; however, relentless fight up and down the Texas Tech rotation helped the Lady Raiders get back on track.
Â
Tech was led by the two-headed offensive monster of Lexi Gordon and Vivian Gray. Gordon turned in a season high 24 points to go along with six rebounds. Gray recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and also added five assists, two steals and three blocks to help lock up the victory. Gordon and Gray scored 15 and 12 points, respectively in the second half.
Â
Alexis Tucker was also in double figures with 12 points and four rebounds. Najé Murray hit a season-high three triples to finish with nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Â
COMEBACK KIDS
In the win over TCU, the Lady Raiders trailed by as many as 16 in the opening quarter. Last season, Tech came back from down 15 against Oklahoma to force overtime and eventually win the game; however, no Lady Raider team in the last five years had come back from down 16 or more to win a game in the last five seasons.
Â
EYEING THE OPPONENT
The Southern Jaguars come into Saturday's contest with a misleading 0-5 record. The Jaguars have faced off with four Power Five squads--including three Big 12 opponents--in their first five games, most recently playing a pair of top-15 opponents in Baylor and Mississippi State. Southern is led by Genovea Johnson, a sophomore guard averaging 16.3 points to rank top-five in the SWAC. Despite a tough start, the Jaguars figure to be a factor in the SWAC this season after finishing third in the conference last year. The Jaguars are led by third-year head coach Carlos Funchess.
