Red Raiders Remain at No. 17 in National Polls

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is ranked No. 17 nationally according to the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the USA TODAY Coaches Poll which were both released on Monday.
The Red Raiders (4-1) are coming off an impressive week where they earned an 80-46 win over Troy and then an 81-40 victory over Grambling on Sunday. Tech is limiting opponents to 33.8 percent shooting which leads the Big 12 and is 14th nationally along with being 12th in the country by holding its first five opponents to 55.0 points per game.
Texas Tech is No. 17 in the AP Top 25 for the second straight week after beginning the year at No. 14 in the preseason poll, while it falls from No. 13 in the USA TODAY Preseason Poll to No. 17 in the release today which is the first in-season polling by the panel of voters. Houston, which handed the Red Raiders their only loss this season, rose to No. 7 in the AP Top 25 and is No. 8 in the USA TODAY Poll.
The Red Raiders return to action with a pair of non-conference games this week, starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against Abilene Christian (5-0) at the United Supermarkets Arena before playing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Comerica Center in Frisco. Tech is currently 4-0 at home this season coming into the game against the Wildcats.
TTU head coach Chris Beard enters this week with 98 wins as the program's head coach. Mac McClung leads the team with 17.2 points per game, including going for 20 in the wins over Northwestern State and Troy while Marcus Santos-Silva leads the Big 12 with two double-doubles. Santos-Silva is averaging 7.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game through five contests in his senior season. Kyler Edwards recorded his first double-double of his career on Sunday, going for 13 points and 11 rebounds after scoring a season-high 14 on Friday against Troy. Edwards is averaging 10.2 points per game this season and leads the team with 21 assists after having five on Sunday. Terrence Shannon, Jr. is adding 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game to give the Red Raiders three double-figure scorers coming into the third week of the season.
Gonzaga (3-0) is the top-ranked team in both polls this week, while Baylor (3-0) is second in both. Kansas, which travels to Lubbock for the Big 12 opener on Dec. 17, is currently No. 5 in the polls. The Big 12 is also represented by No. 11 West Virginia and No. 13 Texas in the AP Top 25.
