Women's Golf Notches Runner-Up Finish at Lady Puerto Rico Classic
February 11, 2020 | Women's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Texas Tech women's golf team concluded the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with their second-consecutive runner-up finish to kick off the 2020 spring campaign on Monday with a team total of 870.
The Red Raiders finished ahead of seven programs ranked in both the Golfstat and Golfweek Magazine's top-50 women's collegiate team rankings, including conference foes Iowa State, Oklahoma State and TCU. Tech trailed only Northwestern at the conclusion of the event after the Wildcats broke the single-round scoring record with an 8-under final round.
"Our team showed great effort this week," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "It was exciting to watch. We fought back yesterday after a slow start in round one and were in contention all day during the final round. Credit to Northwestern for playing awesome today."
The second-place appearance was the fourth of the season for Tech and the fifth time they have landed in the top-three in seven total tournaments.
Tech was headed by Sofia Garcia on Monday, who notched her fourth top-three posting of the 2019-20 season by going out in 4-under in the final round, tying for third place at 6-under for the tournament. Garcia tallied five birdies to just one bogey on Monday and had the second-most birdies in the competition with 13.
Gala Dumez posted her second-straight top-10 finish to begin the semester after shooting even par over the event's 54 holes to tie for eighth. Dumez now has three top-10 showings in seven tournaments.
Anna Dong became the third Red Raider to land inside the top-25 with a tie for 22nd at 5-over. Taylor finished the tournament in a tie for 31st and was one of three Red Raiders to record at least four birdies on Monday, joining Dong and Garcia.
Cecilie Nielsen rounded out the field for Tech in a tie for 49th at 12-over.
The Red Raiders will make their return on Feb. 24th as they travel to Houston to participate in the Icon Invitational.
