Â
WEEKEND PRIMER
Friday's game between Tech and HBU will be the first meeting between the two programs on the diamond. Tech is 67-35 all-time against Southland Conference opponents. Meanwhile, Tech is 1-0 all-time against Northern Colorado with a 10-1 win over the Bears in 2013 in Tadlock's second game as the Red Raider head coach.
Â
Sophomore Clayton Beeter will get the Opening Day start for Texas Tech. The right-hander went 0-3 last year with eight saves and a 3.48 ERA as the team's closer, earning freshman All-America and All-Big 12 honors. Vanderbilt transfer Austin Becker gets the ball Saturday against HBU, while junior right-hander Bryce Bonnin gets the nod against UNC on Saturday. Sophomore lefty Mason Montgomery will start on Sunday against the Bears.
Â
Texas Tech is 6-2 all-time on Opening Day under Tadlock. Since 1985, the Red Raiders are 31-3 in home openers, winning 19 of their last 21, with last year's 9-4 loss to Oregon one of the rare exceptions. Offensive firepower has been a steady theme, however, as Tech has amassed at least 10 runs in 11 of those 21 matchups.
Â
HIGH EXPECTATIONS
The 2020 season marks the 71st edition of Texas Tech baseball and the eighth under the helm of Tim Tadlock. In seven seasons leading the Red Raiders, Tadlock's squads have compiled a 285-152 overall record and amassed a litany of hardware with three Big 12 titles ('16, '17, '19), five NCAA regional appearances and four trips to the College World Series ('14, '16, '18, '19).
Texas Tech starts the season with its second-highest collection of preseason rankings in program history. Four polls have the Red Raiders starting at No. 3, which matches the highest preseason ranking in team history.Â
Â
For the third-straight year and the fourth time since 1999, the Red Raiders were picked to win the Big 12 after a preseason vote by the league's coaches. The Red Raiders received 62 points after a vote by the conference coaches, with six first-place votes. Tech topped the poll once again after winning its third Big 12 title in four years. The 1999 ranking was the first conducted by the Big 12 coaches.
Â
ROSTER OUTLOOK
While some of the stars who captured headlines last year have departed, Texas Tech returns virtually all of its offensive production outside of Jung, Gabe Holt and Cameron Warren. A talented group of 19 letterwinners are back, highlighted by a deep and dynamic pitching staff, while 9 freshmen, two redshirt freshmen, three junior college transfers and an SEC transfer round out the group.
Â
Two-third of the weekend rotation returns in freshman All-American Micah Dallas along with Bryce Bonnin. Freshman All-American closer Clayton Beeter and 11th Round draft pick John McMillon give Tech two of the strongest arms in the country. Offensively, Dylan Neuse is a unanimous All-Big 12 preseason pick while senior Brian Klein has been tabbed to several preseason All-America lists.
