
Red Raiders Conclude First Day at Blue Gray

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team wrapped up day one of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a 4-1 loss to No. 48 Alabama and a 1-0 lead in their second-round match with Middle Tennessee State, which was limited to just doubles play.
Tech opened the Blue Gray with singles matches against the Crimson Tide. No. 125 Riccardo Roberto of Alabama took the first match point of the morning with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Isaac Arevalo on court three before No. 80 Edson Ortiz took down No. 53 Parker Wynn at a 6-4, 6-2 clip on court one.
The Crimson Tide notched their third point of the match on court four, as Alexey Nesterov defeated No. 123 Reed Collier in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
The Red Raiders would storm back to take the next two match points as No. 74 Ilgiz Valiev secured his third win of the year with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Zhe Zhou and Franco Ribero moved to 6-0 on the season with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Patrick Kaukovalta on court five.
With the final match point on the line, Jeremy Gschwendtner would fight back from an early deficit to take the final singles match at 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(3).
In their match with the Blue Raiders, Tech captured the early 1-0 match advantage by winning the doubles point. Arevalo and Jackson Cobb took court one, 6-4 and Thomson and Valiev won court three, 6-1.
The Red Raiders and the Blue Raiders will continue their match with singles action tomorrow morning, with first serve scheduled for 10 a.m. CT. Tech will play another match on Saturday following the conclusion of the morning's contests.
