February 22, 2020 | Men's Tennis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins to close out the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a 4-1 defeat of No. 27 Middle Tennessee State and a 4-0 victory over Fresno State on Sunday.
Tech moved to 8-4 on the year and 4-4 in neutral-site matches with the wins.
The Red Raiders resumed their match with the Blue Raiders after capturing the doubles point on Friday night and taking a 1-0 advantage. In singles action, junior Ilgiz Valiev took down Chris Edge in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Parker Wynn notched the second match point for the Red Raiders on court one with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tom Moonen.
The fourth and final match point would come courtesy of sophomore Franco Ribero, who moved to 7-0 in dual matches this season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Tech's victory over No. 27 Middle Tennessee State was their second ranked victory in their last three matches against ranked foes, dating back to their 4-2 triumph over then-No. 20 Mississippi State in Starkville.
In the consolation finals match with the Bulldogs, Tech got off to another fast start by securing the doubles point. Wynn and freshman Reed Collier took their match at 6-1 to earn their first doubles win of the weekend. Thomson and Valiev sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 effort on court three.
In singles, Valiev moved to 3-0 in the Blue Gray with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court two to give the Red Raiders the 2-0 advantage. Isaac Arevalo would quickly follow Valiev with a straight-set victory of his own, winning 7-6, 6-1 on court three.
The fourth and decisive match point would be provided by Wynn, who served up his second-consecutive 6-3, 6-3 win on court one.
