February 28, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 18-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team rattled off a pair of wins with a 4-0 effort against New Mexico State and a 4-1 victory over Tulsa on Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders are now 10-4 on the season and 4-0 in Lubbock.
"We knew it would be a tough day," head coach Daniel Whitehead said. "We played two very good teams and I thought we came out sharp and executed against New Mexico State."
Tech began the Friday doubleheader by securing the doubles points against the Aggies courtesy of a 6-2 win by Reed Collier and Parker Wynn on court two, followed by a 6-4 victory by Bjorn Thomson and Ilgiz Valiev on court three.
In singles, the Red Raiders maintained momentum with a trio of straight-set wins, beginning with a 6-0, 6-4 victory by freshman Connor Johnson on court six. Johnson's effort moved him to 4-0 to begin his career, joining sophomore Franco Ribero with the lone undefeated mark in dual match play with at least four victories.
Ribero improved to 8-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph on court four to give the Red Raiders their third point of the morning.
Valiev secured the match for the Red Raiders with a stellar performance on court one, knocking off Nicolas Buitrago 6-4, 6-1.
In the afternoon's match with the Golden Hurricanes, Tech was forced to battle from behind after surrendering the match's first point in doubles.
Valiev provided his second victory of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 thrashing on court two to get the Red Raiders on the board before Collier picked up his first win with a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court four.
Thomson notched his seventh dual match victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court six to give Tech the 3-1 advantage over the Golden Hurricanes.
With the match-clinching point hanging in the balance, Wynn served up his fourth ranked victory of the year as he battled his way to a 7-6(8), 6-3 victory over No. 56 Pearson of Tulsa, securing the match for the Red Raiders at 4-1.
"We fought back well against Tulsa," Whitehead said. "That doubles point was a gut check, but the guys know that doubles are over very quickly and that you have to be prepared for the long run and the grind of singles. I thought they responded very well."
