Jung goes deep twice, accounts for four RBI in the 11-3 win.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman Jace Jung went yard twice and senior Brian Klein recorded a career-high three doubles as No. 2 Texas Tech baseball completed the midweek sweep of UNLV with an 11-3 victory over the Rebels on Wednesday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
Sophomore Hunter Dobbins gave Tech 6.0 scoreless innings and struck out eight as the Red Raiders (13-1) built a 5-0 lead through five. The Rebels mounted a rally in the seventh, but Jung's second home run of the day provided an answer, and Tech put up a five-spot in the eighth to pull away for its ninth victory in a row.
Â
Jung blasted a three-run home run over the home bullpen in the third that put Tech ahead 4-0, part of his first career multi-home run game. Klein, meanwhile, went 4-for-4 with three doubles, including a two-bagger in the eighth that plated two and gave the Red Raiders an 8-3 cushion.
Â
Junior reliever Jakob Brustoski came in to stall a UNLV rally in the seventh. The Rebels (3-10) had narrowed the gap to 5-2 and had men on the corners with one out when Brustoski took over. He promptly got a soft grounder to third followed by a strikeout to minimize the damage and keep Tech in front, 5-3.
Â
Brustoski put a zero on the board in the eighth, and Tech pulled away in the home half of the frame with five runs. Sophomore Cole Stilwell followed Klein's two-run double with an RBI single, and junior Cody Masters put an exclamation point on the contest with a two-run dinger to right.
Â
Dobbins now improves to 2-0 as a starter this season and has racked up an impressive 18 strikeouts in 11.0 innings with just two runs allowed on nine hits. Â
Â
This was the seventh straight home game for Tech with a double-digit run total as the Red Raiders are outscoring their opponents 110-21 in eight home contests. All nine starters recorded a hit and seven Red Raiders touched home on Wednesday.
Â
Three other Red Raiders joined Klein and Jung with multi-hit games. Freshman Cal Conley finished 3-for-5 with his fifth double of the year and an RBI. Dru Baker, who has reached base safely in every game this season, added a 2-for-6 effort with a triple and a double, while Masters went 2-for-5 in his fourth start of the season. Junior Dylan Neuse secured a hit in the eighth to continue his 14-game hitting streak to open the season.
