Beeter strikes out 12 as Tech earns 7-1 win over Rice
LUBBOCK, Texas – Redshirt sophomore Clayton Beeter struck out 12 through six innings of work as No. 2 Texas Tech baseball picked up its 10th win in a row with a 7-1 victory over Rice on Friday night in front of a sold out crowd at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
The 12 strikeouts were the most by a Red Raider since Corey Taylor in 2013 and the most by a Big 12 pitcher this season. The 14-1 start for Texas Tech matches the 2018 club for the best start through 15 games since 1996.
Â
The Red Raiders opened the scoring in the first off back-to-back doubles from sophomore Cole Stilwell and freshman Jace Jung to take an early 2-0 lead. The Owls (2-11) fought back with a run in the third, but the Red Raiders answered with a run in the home half of the frame and further widened the gap with one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Â
Sophomore Cole Stilwell and freshman Dillon Carter had multi-hit games, while Jung and fellow freshman Nate Rombach drove in two runs each. Sophomore Micah Dallas pitched three shutout innings in relief, adding five strikeouts to the tally to give Tech 17 on the night, its most in a nine-inning contest this season.
Â
After a two-out walk from senior Brian Klein, back-to-back doubles from Stilwell and Jung got the scoring started to put Tech in front 2-0. After the Owls trimmed the lead to one in the third, a sac fly from Jung gave him his second RBI and restored the two-run lead.
Â
Sophomore Dru Baker made it a 4-1 game in the sixth with an RBI single to center. Rombach provided insurance in the seventh with a two-run double, part of a three-run frame for the Red Raiders as Fulford chipped in a sacrifice fly that gave Tech the 7-1 advantage.
