August 29, 2020 | Women's Volleyball
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team got a good look at its 2020 roster as several Red Raiders shined in the squad's annual Red & Black Scrimmages on Aug. 28-29 at United Supermarkets Arena. Â
Â
"It was great to get into the arena and get the feel of a real match," head coach Tony Graystone said. "I felt like we got better every set and I'm happy with where we're at right now. We'll keep doing this every weekend and continue to improve and prepare for the Big 12 opener in a few weeks."
Â
Sophomore transfer Reagan Cooper led Tech's offensive efforts with a combined 31 kills in Tech's two scrimmages. Arizona native Caitlin Dugan followed closely with 30 kills and Texas A&M senior transfer Samantha Sanders sat third on the team with 28 kills. Freshman Mackenzie Morgan made major waves as she tallied 21 kills, six service aces and 50 digs in her first Red & Black weekend.
Â
Returning junior Tatum Rohme led the way with 84 assists over the two-day event and newcomer Reese Rhodes broke out of her shell with a total of 60 assists, six kills and two solo blocks.
Â
On the defensive side of the ball, senior libero Emerson Solano paced the Texas Tech back line with 64 digs. While leading the Red Raiders with nine service aces, sophomore Lindsey Dodson followed Solano with 55 digs. Junior Katy Northcut collected 36 digs through matches one and two and Sanders tallied 31.
Â
The Red Raiders middles went to work at the net as Allison Bloss and Cadi Boyer picked up seven solo blocks apiece while junior Karrington Jones collected five. Jones led the middle blockers with 12 kills.
Â
"Right now, our pin hitters are looking good and I'm really happy with the improvement in our ball control," Graystone said. "More than anything, we need time together and more opportunities to compete like we did this weekend."
Â
The Red Raiders are set to open up the 2020 season at home against West Virginia on Sept. 24. For all the latest information on the Texas Tech volleyball team, visit TexasTech.com or follow @TexasTechVB on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
