Volleyball falls to No. 20 TCU in heartbreaker
FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (10-18, 2-14) fell in five sets to No. 20 TCU (19-9, 9-7) on Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders were almost able to complete the reverse sweep, but the Horned Frogs pulled it out at the end as they celebrated senior day.
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Kenna McKenzie were the go-to attackers for Tech in the match as they combined for 35 kills. Jioshvili Ravva also recorded her eighth double-double of the season as she posted 15 digs to go along with her 18 kills.
Reagan Engler finished with 12 kills in her return to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and hit an efficient .333. Shelby Ignash finished with nine kills and a team-high five blocks while also hitting .467.
Peyton Dunn picked up seventh double-double of the season going for 42 assists and 12 digs. Katelyn Cochran reached double-digits in assists as well and was exceptional from the service line, going for 13 assists and three aces while also picking up five digs.
Sierra Grizzle finished with another 20-dig performance while also recording five aces, helping Tech rally back in the late sets to push the match to five. Maddie Smotherman also had a big impact from behind the service line, going for three aces while recording four digs.
How it Happened:
The Red Raiders came out of the gates hot, scoring the first four points of the match and went up 5-1 before the Horned Frogs went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-8 lead and force a timeout from Tech. TCU remained in the lead, but were forced to take a timeout as the Red Raiders went on a 4-0 lead to cut into the lead at 17-15. The set was tied 25-25 and after a couple of successful challenges by Tony Graystone but TCU was able to get out of the set with a 27-25 win.
Tech again took an early lead and again the Horned Frogs didn't go away as they took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout. The Horned Frogs took a 20-14 lead and looked like they were going to run away with it, but a 4-0 run by the Red Raiders out of a timeout put some pressure on TCU. They responded well to the pressure, however, getting two quick kills and taking the momentum on their way to a 25-22 set two win.
In the third set, Tech was up early, and this time held onto that lead as they used three aces and 12 kills while hitting .348 in the set to win 25-19 and extend the game. Grizzle and Smotherman were exceptional behind the service line to not only get aces but throw off the Horned Frogs first touch and force them into tough offensive sets.
Another close set but TCU took control early this time, going up 13-9 to force a Red Raider timeout. Tech rallied back and took a late 22-20 lead thanks to serves from Cochran as she got two aces and like Grizzle, threw off the first touch of TCU's offense. Tech took the set 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.
Tech's success at the service line continued as they went up 8-4 before the teams' switched sides in the fifth set. TCU cut into that lead quickly and make it 10-9 to force a Tech timeout. The Horned Frogs then took the lead 13-12 thanks to a resurgence in their block. TCU would go on to score the final two points of the match to escape with a 3-2 win.
UP NEXT: Tech will head home for its final two matches of the season against Houston and Utah next week.
