Red Raiders prepped for road game at No. 9 Kansas.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will face its first road test of the 2020 season Friday with an away match against No. 9 Kansas in Lawrence. The Jayhawks will enter ranked ninth after the United Soccer Coaches first poll, which was released on Tuesday.
Despite it being the third week of the season, both squads have just one match under their belts due to COVID-19 postponements. The Red Raiders are coming off a 0-0 draw with Baylor last week, while the Jayhawks are two weeks removed from their opening 1-0 win at Texas.
Tech's high-powered offense went without a goal in 110 minutes of play last Friday night, but the squad is confident and excited that goals will come.
"There's scoring and there's creating scoring chances," said head coach Tom Stone. "We created scoring chances [against Baylor]. We had three or four really good ones. If we do that again against Kansas, we have the people to finish them."
With no goals on the scoresheet, the theme of the Baylor game was defense. Tech's back line got off to a good start seeking its third straight season atop the Big 12 in goals allowed. TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week honoree Hannah Anderson and highly-touted freshman Briley Weatherford worked hard in front of goalkeeper Madison Martin for the entirety of regulation and both overtime periods. Sixth-year senior and captain Margaret Begley made two game-saving goal line clearances during her 101 minutes of work.
Martin was stellar in net, making eight saves in her college debut while filling in for reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year Madison White. For the effort, she was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
Anderson expressed her pleasure at finally being able to open the season with her squad.
"It was our first game in about six or seven months," she said. "[We are] just kind of getting our connection back and learning to play with new players. I think getting back on our feet and playing a game helped us a lot."
First touch in Lawrence is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
