Red Raiders Wrap Schooner Fall Classic in Fifth Place
September 28, 2020 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas Tech women's golf team began their 2020-21 campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman.
Following a suspension of play midway through the second round of play on Sunday night due to wind, Tech closed the tournament with rounds of 290 and 297 on Monday after shooting 282 in the first round.
The Red Raiders have finished in the top five in four of the last five seasons and their team total of 869 was the lowest total to begin a season since the 2017 Jim West Challenge in San Marcos, where Tech finished at 842.
Sofia Garcia, who held the overnight lead in the tournament, led the way for the Red Raiders at 2-over to tie for sixth. Garcia's top-10 posting was the second-consecutive for the junior, as she opened the 2019 fall semester with an individual title in Dallas.
After being 8-over to begin the third and final round, Anna Dong carded five birdies en route to a 2-under round to finish in a tie for 12th at 6-over. Cecilie Nielsen concluded the tournament in a tie for 21st at 9-over while Amy Taylor tied for 43rd at 16-over. Pyrene Delample, in her first collegiate tournament, tied for 52nd at 23-over.
The Red Raiders will return to action at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin on Oct. 10-11.
