LADY RAIDER RECAP: No. 23 Texas 72, Texas Tech 53
January 30, 2021 | Women's Basketball
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball team fell short to No. 23 Texas on Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center, as the Longhorns used a second-quarter run to quell the Lady Raiders' hopes of a sweep in the season series.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Raiders were led by Vivian Gray and Maka Jackson, who each scored 12 points. Gray came up a rebound shy of her third-straight double-double, also recording two steals and four blocks to tie a career high. Gray also became the 20th active Division I player to reach 1,500 points, and one of two with under 100 games played—she's made 77 appearances in her DI career.
Â
Jackson's 12 points were a season high, paired with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshmen Khadija Faye and Khyla Wade-Warren both provided important minutes against Texas's standout Charli Collier, both adding six points. Wade-Warren had five rebounds and a block, while Faye pulled down four boards.
Â
The two teams battled hard in the first quarter, going blow for blow with Texas leading, 18-15, after the opening frame. Led by Jackson's five points, six of eight Lady Raiders to see action in the first period got on the scoresheet. Tech shot 46.7 percent from the floor in the quarter while holding Texas to only seven makes on 21 attempts (33.3 percent).
Â
The battle continued well into the second quarter, with Tech outscoring the Longhorns in the opening three-and-a-half minutes of the period to cut the deficit to one; however, a 19-0 Texas run in second quarter gave the Longhorns a 40-20 lead with two minutes and change to go before halftime. Texas would lead it, 43-23, at the break.
Â
The Lady Raiders wouldn't throw in the towel, opening the second half on an 8-2 run—led by four points from Faye—to trim the deficit to 14. The Lady Raiders, in fact, outscored the Longhorns in the second half, but couldn't quite claw back into it.
