RECAP: Texas Tech 1, No. 9 Baylor 3

The Red Raiders split the series against the ninth-ranked Bears.
WACO, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (11-6, 1-3) dropped a hard-fought contest against No. 9 Baylor (8-3, 2-1) Saturday night in Waco. The Red Raiders came close to forcing another five-set match, falling 13-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-27.
Kenna Sauer and Karrington Jones led the Red Raiders offensively, each recording double-digit kills. Sauer tallied 16 kills, hitting .286 while Jones added 12 on a .526 clip. Alex Kirby eclipsed 40 assists for the sixth time this season and recorded her sixth double-double with 41 assists and 15 digs. KJ Adams led Tech with 16 digs, while Maddie Correa tied her career high of 11 digs. Brooke Kanas collected four blocks as the Red Raiders totaled six in the match.
The Bears controlled the opening set from the start, jumping out to a 7-2 lead to begin the match. Baylor pushed the lead to seven after a couple of Tech errors to make it 14-7. The ninth-ranked team in the country used an 8-1 run to take the first set 25-13.
Tech evened the match with a 25-23 set two win. The Red Raiders began the set with an 8-2 run and increased the lead to nine, 14-5, as the Bears burned their second timeout. Out of the break Baylor strung together five points to cut the lead to 14-10. Tech pushed the advantage back to six after a kill from Sauer, but a 6-2 Baylor run brought the Bears within a couple of points at 22-20. A Baylor attack error gave Tech its first set point. The Bears fought off a two set points, including a challenge that overturned the final point of the set, giving Baylor another life. Sauer ended the Bears chances with a kill to tie the match at one set apiece.
Baylor regained the lead with a third set win, hitting .455 in the frame. The Bears tallied five straight points to start the set before a 4-1 Tech run pulled the Red Raiders within two, 6-8. Baylor extended its lead to seven with a 5-0 run and continued to widen the gap, leading by as many as nine 21-12. Tech tallied the next three points to shrink the lead back to six, but Baylor held off the Red Raiders for a 25-17 win.
The Red Raiders fought to extend the match to five sets, battling in the fourth before falling 27-25. Tech struck first, taking a 10-5 advantage that forced an early Baylor timeout. The Bears tallied the next two points, bringing the score back to three and continued to stay within range of the Red Raiders. Baylor rattled off four straight points to make it a one-point contest at 19-18 and tied the match at 22 with a 3-0 run. A kill from Sauer and an ace from Adams created set point for Tech, but Baylor held strong, earning the next three points to force match point. Tech fought off one match point to tie the frame at 25, but a kill and a ball handling error gave the Bears a 27-25 win, ending Tech's chances of forcing a fifth set.

Texas Tech returns home to face Iowa State on Oct. 7 and 8 at United Supermarkets Arena. Thursday's match is slated for 4:30 p.m. and will be the mental health awareness match. Friday's match is scheduled for 6 p.m. and is the Red Raiders' pink match for breast cancer awareness.
